If you spotted some discounted Helldivers 2 listings on Steam, hold your horses – it’s a scam. While you might want to join the war effort for democracy now that mechs and buffs are on the way, check twice if you’re purchasing the right copy of Helldivers 2. Now read on to learn how two indie games tried to scam players on Steam.
Arrowhead Game Studios immediately took down scammers on Steam
Arrowhead community manager Thomas “Twinbeard” Petersson noted that ‘All fake store pages now seem to have been taken down by Valve, who acted very swiftly after we reached out’ on the official Helldivers 2 Discord. They also mentioned that ‘our legal department is on it,’ meaning that Arrowhead might pursue legal action. For now, this means that you no longer have to worry about purchasing a legitimate copy of Helldivers 2.
On February 29, 2024, two fake Helldivers 2 listings were spotted with 50% and 75% discounts. It was evident that this was a bid to take advantage of the third-person shooter’s massive success. Fortunately, the developers were able to work with Valve to take these down. Helldivers 2 CEO Johan Pilestedt has reminded users to ‘Check user reviews beforehand to avoid being bamboozled.’
Just to be sure, the actual Steam page will have the game’s launch date – February 8, 2024. You should only be able to pick between two options – Helldivers 2 and Helldivers 2: Super Citizen Edition. ‘People posting as us trying to scam people is obviously very sad and frustrating, and for that as well as for security reasons we urge you to stay clear of them,’ noted Petersson. Fake listings are a problem that has plagued other games like Palworld as well according to Reddit users.
According to images from Wario64, one of these fraudulent listings was from a game called Figurality from ‘SoleOnBoard Studio.’ And the other was DO NOT SMILE from ‘Whitehole Games.’ The latter has already had its fair share of backlash from the Reddit community. But now that Valve and Arrowhead have taken these listings down, you should be able to quickly nab a copy and join your friends as they spread managed democracy against Terminid and Automaton forces.
