There might be one thing worse than Chargers in Helldivers 2, and that’s a different type of Charger. Helldivers is taking the gaming world by storm, becoming an extremely popular game as of the launch. As a PS5 exclusive launching on PC, it is thought to have sold over 8 million copies in a month.
This popularity shows no signs of slowing down, and the team shooter has hit peaks of 450,000 concurrent players on Steam. Some members of the community, it seems, are only just now discovering that there is more than one type of Charger in Helldivers 2. While it would be extremely on-brand for developer Arrowhead to shadow-drop a new Charger variant into the game without telling anyone – much like the debacle with flying bugs – this might not be the case.
Is this a ‘new Charger’ in Helldivers 2
In a post on the Helldivers 2 subreddit, one player has shared a video with the title ‘New Chargers!’. However, these are Chargers that have been in the game from the start. As pointed out in the comments, these Chargers – which might be known as Charger Behemoths – have had a chance to appear during missions since the game launched.
One person replied to the video, saying: “If you do a mission on medium to eliminate 2 chargers. That’s what those look like since the start of the game. The other normal-looking chargers are the chargers you see spawning on harder missions. That charger must have been promoted lol”
In the video, you can see they are visually different from the regular Chargers whom players have all grown to love and hate in equal measure. Where the ‘regular’ Charger has more black-coloured plating, the Behemoth variant appears to be pale. It also has a slightly different front compared to the others.
Perhaps the confusion about these Charger variants is that so many people don’t bother playing the lower-difficulty missions and so they’ve effectively skipped out on seeing them. There are other posts on the game’s subreddit asking the same thing from February. This all but confirms they’ve been in the game all along.
Thankfully, these Chargers operate in the same way as others. The bad news is they are still a pain to take down. Regardless, we can only hope that Arrowhead doesn’t get any bright ideas to add monstrous new Charger variants to the game.
