Arrowhead is always looking to make Helldivers 2 better by adding new content whether it be new gameplay features such as automatons or fresh armor and guns. One thing fans have clamored for since day one of its release is weapons such as sci-fi swords, and the Helldivers 2 dev has given an exciting update on the possibility of adding melee weapons in the future.
One of the best aspects of the game is the developer’s constant communication with fans. The dev has discussed the possibility of crossovers such as Star Wars, and they have also revealed an in-development nerf that will stop players ‘dying in 2 secs’. Not only that, but the 01.000.203 patch notes include a list of known issues looking to be fixed.
While mega nerfs and discussions of crossovers are exciting topics on their own, fans will also be pumped to hear that there is the possibility Arrowhead will add melee weapons to the game.
Helldivers 2 adding melee weapons is plausible
Helldivers 2 community manager, Twinbeard, has briefly discussed the possibility of Arrowhead adding melee weapons to the game. As mentioned by PCGamer, art for the game has included rifles with bayonets and energized sabers.
Naturally, fans have been asking the developer on Discord whether melee weapons were removed or if they will be added in the future. In response to queries, Twinbeard said ‘It might still happen’.
Right now, the addition of melee weapons is marked as ‘plausible’. However, the community manager has said they will not be adding lightsabers from Star Wars as it wouldn’t fit the game’s lore.
In addition, Arrowhead will not be adding Warhammer 40K bolters, but Twinbeard is unsure if they will add general bolters or an IRL equivalent.
Although there is a melee attack button in Helldivers 2, this is not really an effective strategy for offensive maneuvers. Right now the primary offensive weapons in the game are all guns such as assault rifles, grenade pistols, and flamethrowers.
The addition of melee weapons would be fantastic as, again, it’s something most of the community has craved. Although not definitive, it seems likely that it will be added in the future and it will be interesting to see how Arrowhead implements them.
