To say Helldivers 2 wasn’t an instant-smash hit would be an understatement. The original game failed to peak at over 7,000 concurrent players on Steam, but its sequel reached close to 500,000 concurrent players upon its release in February 2024. Since then, it still sees an average of 150,000-200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, with the number only increasing when PlayStation gamers are taken into account, and this doesn’t look to be changing any time soon.
Video Game Industry Analyst Mat Piscatella shared data from March 2024, detailing the best-selling and most played games by platform, as well as other data regarding the video game industry and market as a whole. There is a lot of interesting data to dive into, but perhaps the most noteworthy piece of information is that Helldivers 2 is currently the best-selling game of 2024 despite only releasing on two out of the four main platforms and only being two months old at the time the data was collected. Helldivers 2 is also the 7th best-selling game published by Sony in terms of revenue and it will only continue to climb the ranks as time goes on.
Helldivers 2 debuted in February 2024 as the best-selling game of the month but has since dropped to 2nd place in March 2024, being edged out by Dragon’s Dogma 2, which has sold more copies in its first month than Dragon’s Dogma and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen has combined in the 12 years since its initial release. With Dragon’s Dogma 2 being a single-player game, its sales will likely dwindle over time which is expected, so we could see Helldivers 2 overtake it in the rankings when the next set of data is released for April 2024. Speaking of single-player games, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently the 4th best-selling game of 2024.
When it comes to the most played games of the month, on the PS5 Helldivers ranked 5th behind Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA 5, and NBA 2K24. While on Steam it ranked 1st beating out Counter-Strike 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Balatro, and Rainbow Six: Siege.
