Helldivers 2 has one of the most engaged communities in gaming today, with players regularly role-playing as members of Super Earth in the fight against the Automatons and Terminids. This is most common on social media platforms which helps to build a sense of teamwork and it has contributed to the game’s success.

But, the recent actions of both Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony in recent weeks has begun to erode public perception of the game. From regular nerfs that make Helldivers 2 less fun to play, to the PSN controversy which has restricted access to the game in most of the world, we could finally be seeing the effects of it as Helldivers 2 reaches its lowest concurrent players ever.

According to Steamdb, Helldivers 2 is currently at its lowest average concurrent player count since launch, at least on PC. While it seems like the player count has been holding steady throughout the recent PSN controversy, looking back at historical figures paints a more alarming picture in that many players abandoned the game long before 180 countries were restricted from accessing it. It could also be fair to assume that more of the players are on PS5 than PC, but based on the game’s own in-game player count stats, when comparing the two side by side in real time, it would indicate that the majority of players are on PC.

This means that Helldivers 2 could be in a worrying downward spiral that so far it has failed to get out of. It isn’t uncommon for games to slowly decrease in players post-launch until it finds a baseline of players that return to the game day in and day out. But, three months in and it appears that Helldivers 2 has yet to find that figure. The recent PSN controversy and the developers consistently mishandling updates which results in new weapons launching with faults, weapons regularly being nerfed, and some issues being “fixed” months ago but are still present in the game has likely contributed to some players just moving on for now.

Despite this, Helldivers 2 has managed to build one of the most engaged communities in gaming, with players currently working together to eradicate 2 billion Automatons and, although they are slightly failing right now, it will likely be a success.
