Dolphin Emulator, the famous GameCube and Wii emulator, is finally coming to Steam in Q2 2023, according to the developers.

The software isn’t available just yet, though you can wish-list it through Steam now. The developers are labelling it their ‘experiment,’ which is quite a humble name for a piece of software that’s existed for nearly twenty years now.

Dolphin is an emulator capable of running GameCube and Wii games, and is a fan favourite for anyone looking to enjoy back-ups of timeless classics such as Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess or Super Smash Bros Melee or Brawl.

It’s important to note that no games, or roms, will be provided by Dolphin, and you will need to legally source these yourself.

Dolphin Emulator actually supports gameplay up to 4K – which is one of the main attractions pulling people towards it. Similarly, with the closure of the Nintendo eShop for 3DS and Wii-U on March 27th, it’s becoming increasingly important for the history of video games to be accessible following events such as this.

Dolphin Emulator Steam release date speculation

Currently – there is a ‘Planned Release Date: Q2 2023‘ listed on the Steam Early Access page.

Aside from that, there’s no real information to go off for the release. However, the software has been pretty polished for quite some time now. It’s likely a case of having to package it correctly for Steam, and and ensure that it runs smoothly on all platforms (Windows, macOS, SteamOS + Linux).

In light of that – we’re going to expect it to launch fairly soon.

The fact it’s going to be running on SteamOS tells us that we’re also likely going to be able to play it on Steam Deck – which we know is already possible thanks to the Steam Deck’s flexible software.
