Doctor Who is set to mark its 60th Anniversary with three special episodes that not only mark the return of beloved modern Who showrunner, Russell T. Davies, but are also set to see fan favourite modern Who actors from Davies’ era returning as part of the cast of these specials.

In addition to the returning actors, these specials are also set to feature several familiar faces appearing in Doctor Who for the first time.

Here we’ll take a look at who has been officially announced as returning for the 60th Anniversary specials alongside those actors who are rumoured to be joining the cast but have not been confirmed yet.

Who’s starring in the cast of the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary specials?

David Tennant returns as The Doctor (The 14th)

Before The Power of The Doctor aired as part of the BBC‘s 100th Anniversary Celebrations marking the end of Jodie Whittaker‘s time as The Thirteenth Doctor.

It’d been officially announced that Sex Education star, Ncuti Gatwa, would be the next actor to play The Doctor. In addition to the announcement that former Doctor Who stars, David Tennant and Catherine Tate, would be returning for the 60th Anniversary specials as well.

However, it was widely believed that Tennant would be reprising his role as The Tenth Doctor, as he’d done for the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of The Doctor.

Except now, following the regeneration of The Thirteenth Doctor, we know that’s not quite the case. As we saw The Doctor regenerate with the same appearance as their Tenth self, officially revealing David Tennant as The Fourteenth Doctor, with Ncuti Gatwa set to play The Fifteenth Doctor.

Naturally, we don’t know much yet about how or why The Doctor is revisiting “one of the old favourites“, but, thanks to the Official Doctor Who Magazine‘s comic strip. We do know that straight after regenerating, The Fourteenth Doctor is pulled into a confrontation with old adversary, The Daleks, during the 1966 Football World Cup Final.

Catherine Tate returns as Donna Noble

The last time we saw Donna, she had just married her husband, Shaun, unaware that The Master had taken over most of the world’s population and that Galifrey had almost returned, destroying everything.

Now, we pick up with Donna years later, with The Doctor stating in the Anniversary Special’s latest teaser that he doesn’t believe in destiny, but if it exists, then it is heading for Donna.

Although we don’t know yet how, or why exactly, Donna and her family are once more in danger. But, one can’t help but wonder if it could be due to some residual time lord energy from her time as “The Doctor Donna”.

Could it be that Neil Patrick Harris’ mysterious antagonist has plans for Donna, or, could it be that Beep the Meep, or the insectoid, Wrarth, have some sinister plan involving Donna or her family.

Karl Collins returns as Shaun Temple

At the time of writing, there isn’t much information on Shaun’s role in the Specials beyond that he is Donna’s husband, and the father of their daughter, Rose.

Bernard Cribbins returns as Wilfred “Wilf” Mott

The late and beloved actor, Bernard Cribbins, returns in the 60th Anniversary specials as Donna’s grandfather, Wilf.

With the story details for the specials still being kept under wraps in order to avoid spoilers. It’s unknown how much of a role Wilf will have in the story of the specials.

Jacqueline King returns as Sylvia Noble

Another returning member of the Noble family. Jacqueline King returns as Donna’s well meaning but often over bearing mother, Sylvia.

Yasmin Finney stars as Rose Temple-Noble

Heartstopper star, Yasmin Finney, makes her Doctor Who debut in the 60th Anniversary specials as Donna and Shaun’s daughter, Rose.

Neil Patrick Harris stars in an, as yet undisclosed, role

How I Met Your Mother, and A Series of Unfortunate Events star, Neil Patrick Harris, makes his Doctor Who debut in the specials as an, as yet still undisclosed, antagonist to The Doctor.

Although, based on the brief glimpses so far at Harris’ character, it seems as though as he could in fact be playing a new incarnation of The Doctor’s ancient enemy, The Celestial Toymaker.

The Celestial Toymaker was first seen during The First Doctor’s (William Hartnell) adventures.

Ncuti Gatwa stars as The Doctor (The 15th)

Confirmed with a brief glimpse in each of the teaser trailers so far. It appears that The Fourteenth Doctor will, at some point in the specials, regenerate into The Fifteenth Doctor.
