In a bid to inject a breath of fresh air into the action, the Call of Duty franchise often introduces innovative mechanics into multiplayer, co-op, and battle royale modes. For Black Ops 6, the biggest change is the arrival of Omnimovmement, a system that allows you to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction during matches.
Treyarch’s 2024 release managed to become the most successful Call of Duty in history after a record-breaking opening month. Despite millions dropping into casual and competitive matches, players believe simple movements such as crouching and going prone are far too slow. To reveal why movement isn’t as fast as 2019’s Modern Warfare, one dev has shared the all-important intel.
Does Black Ops 6 movement feel clunky?
Content creator TCaptainX shared a TikTok comparing Modern Warfare 2019 to Black Ops 6 which showcases how basic movement in Infinity Ward’s game is much smoother and fluid compared to Treyarch’s most recent release. In response, Treyarch associate director Matt Scronce explained why the simple movements are slower than previous years.
Once prone and crouch speeds become too fast, you end up with mismatch between 1st and 3rd person POV leading to snaking which has been a massive problem in the past. Faster is not always healthier for the overall game experience.
Matt Scronce, treyarch associate director
Scronce continues to reveal Treyarch deliberately adjusted sway and bob mechanics while jumping to stop it from being the very best tactic to use in order to win a gunfight during the heat of battle. He also mentions that there are specific Perks and weapon attachments you can use to improve the movement speed even further if it’s a style of play you’re aiming to use on the virtual battlefield.
He ends by reminding fans Treyarch is always looking at the data collected and the feedback posted by players to continue improving movement speeds alongside other areas of Black Ops 6 that require balancing so a level playing field is maintained across the board.
Are changes coming?
While Black Ops 6’s movement may never reach the fluidity achieved in 2019’s Modern Warfare, there’s every chance Treyarch continues to adjust Omnimovement for the remainder of the cycle. Season 1 Reloaded is the next major update for the game and brings a brand-new Zombies map, new weaponry, and further balancing to prevent snaking and other mechanics from becoming overpowered.
Scronce’s insight into the developmental decisions behind the slower crouching and prone speed is great for the community. Instead of leaving fans in the dark about certain philosophies, the additional clarity is a welcome change and one many hope will continue as Treyarch continues to optimise the game to suit everyone.
