The 3DS is the hot new thing at the moment, offering glasses-free 3D, but Nintendo doesn’t think 3D will be part of its next home console.

“Glasses-free is a big deal,” Reggie Fils-Aime said to CNN. “We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it.”

Nintendo had worked on 3D tech for the GameCube, but the requirement of a new LCD TV and glasses put the platform holder off.

“I think at Nintendo, we realise that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work,” said Nintendo’s Hideki Konno. “In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D.”

While 3D isn’t likely to be a major part of Nintendo’s next console offering, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it as an option if you’ve got the right TV.
