The Tears of the Kingdom best horses are for when soaring through the skies just won’t cut it. Sometimes, exploring on the ground is the best way to see Hyrule, and it’s times like those that you need a good horse.

Make sure you know where all the Tears of the Kingdom stables are, and upgrade your Tears of the Kingdom stamina, because these horses will take us all across Hyrule.

Here is a list of the best horses in Tears of the Kingdom:

Solid colour horses

They’re not the most exciting, but they are the most accessible. These are horses you’ll find wandering around in groups across Hyrule. You’ll notice some are a solid colour, while some have spots and other markings. The solid colour ones have much higher stats, but are also harder to tame, requiring more stamina. If you’re in the early-game and just need a reliable horse, you can’t go wrong with one of these.

Golden horse

You may have come across this one during the Rito storyline. At the Snowfield Stable in the Tabantha Tundra, you’ll find a girl tending to a golden horse, claiming it to have belonged to Zelda. To acquire this horse you need to fulfil a few requirements.

First, talk to Tracee at the Lucky Clover Gazette south of Rito Village to start the ‘Potential Princess Sightings!’ questline. Go to the Snowfield Stable and talk to Harlow to get the ‘Zelda’s Golden Horse’ quest. Head north of the stable to find a herd of horses including the golden one. Catch and tame it, and return to Harlow to complete the quest and register the horse as yours.

Giant white stallion

In the far south of the Necluda region, you’ll find the Lake of the Horse God in a canyon. Following the path all the way to the end, you’ll find a small spring with a horse in it. The giant white stallion certainly lives up to its name, as it’s significantly larger than any other horse in the game. Taming it is no easy feat either, requiring at least two full stamina wheels. While it has huge stamina and strength, meaning it never gets tired, it can’t sprint, nor can it be equipped with a towing harness. So while it has its uses, it’s probably not the best one to use to get around.

Stalhorse

Tears of the Kingdom best horses: Link riding a Stalhorse in the Depths.

This one isn’t a horse in the conventional sense, but is certainly one of the more useful types in TotK. These skeletal horses can be found at night, as well as in the Depths, but disappear in sunlight, so cannot be registered at stables. Why they’re so great, however, is that the Stalhorses you find in the Depths can be ridden over gloom without you taking any damage. With gloom being such a prevalent obstacle in the Depths, getting yourself a Stalhorse can really make navigating some areas a breeze, and it’s well worth picking one up if you come across any.

Can you get Epona in Tears of the Kingdom?

Yes, you can get Epona in Tears of the Kingdom. If you have the Super Smash Bros. Link Amiibo, you can scan it to summon Epona right in front of you, whereupon you simply need to register her at a stable. If you had her registered in BotW, your data will carry over and she’ll already be registered.

While Epona is a great horse with four-star stats in everything, unfortunately she can’t be used to tow anything. This means that while she’s perhaps one of the best horses in the game when it comes to just getting around, you will need to find an alternative for any of your towing needs.

Can you upgrade horses in Tears of the Kingdom?

You can upgrade your horses in Tears of the Kingdom by visiting the Horse God Malanya in the northern Akkala region. It’s located northeast of the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower, and directly north of the East Akkala Stable. After providing her with an Endura Carrot, you’ll be able to upgrade your horse’s stats in exchange for various meals. She can also revive your horse if it was killed. Be aware, though, that certain special horses cannot be upgraded, so don’t be surprised if you get turned away.
