Wondering is Starfield on Xbox Series S? Bethesda, famed for the likes of Fallout and Skyrim, are back with their long-awaited massive space-exploration RPG. Now just moments away from launch, Starfield is guaranteed to be one of the biggest releases of 2023. We already know the next-generation role-playing game is on Microsoft’s flagship Xbox Series X consoles and PC, but will it make its way onto its less powerful sibling?

While you’re preparing for your epic journey and counting down the days to the Starfield release date, make sure to familiarise yourself with the Bethesda Games Studios’ latest creation by checking out our Starfield map guide. You can also keep track of all the latest Starfield early access news in our handy guide – including what time it launches ahead of the wider global launch later in September. For now, let’s take a look at whether or not Starfield will be coming to the Xbox Series S.

Will Starfield release on the Xbox Series S?

Yes, it has been confirmed that Starfield will release on the Xbox Series S. Starfield is a massive game with some impressive visuals, so it’s incredibly impressive that the less powerful Xbx Series S is able to handle the vast galaxy. However, developer Bethesda has made sure the game will also be available on the Xbox Series S for owners of that console.

Naturally, it goes without saying that if you’re planning on playing Starfield on the Xbox Series S, you can only play by downloading the game. Starfield will launch with physical copies, but given the lack of a disc drive on the Series S, that won’t do you any good.

Starfield Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S

There are big differences in terms of power when it comes to the two consles. The Xbox Series X is more powerful and is capable of full 4K resolution while the S supports the lower 2560 x 1440 resolution. When it comes to Starfield, the game will be rendered at different resolutions depending on what console you’re playing on, so make sure to take this into account when deciding what console to play on.

Starfield Xbox Series S resolution

Bethesda Game Studios and Starfield Game Director and Executive Producer Todd Howard told IGN: “It’s 4K in the X. It’s 1440 on the S”. He also confirmed the ambitious game is locked at 30 FPS, which for some people may be a bit of deal breaker. That being said, the developers themselves have backed the move, which they state is ‘not a sign the game is unfinished’.

For those looking for higher quality visuals or an uncapped frame rate, you you might want to consider playing it on another platform. The Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Xbox Series X, and so will make up for that with lower quality graphics and performance. But if you aren’t fussed by 4K gaming, there’s no reason not to play on your Series S. The S is also great for those playing on smaller screens, where you won’t notice the lower resolution as much as if you’re playing on a larger TV or monitor.
