Surface map
The Surface Map is smallest scale on the Starfield map. Before you get too excited at the prospect of a detailed, feature rich map, it’s fairly rudimentary, showing not more than brief overview of discovered points of interest and locations. You can hover over to fast travel.
Planet map
The Planet Map showcase an entire planet at a time with all known points of interest highlighted. While on the Planet Map, you’re zoomed out to an overview of the whole planet or moon. From here, you can see general data about the world you’re on, including details about the planet’s gravity, resources, atmosphere, and fauna and flora, but also fast travel to points of interests on the surface.
System map
Zoom out further, and you’ll get to the System Map. Here, you have an overview of the entire star system – planets, moons, spacestations, obriting starstations, ships of interest, and more. From the System Map, you can click on individual planets and moons to bring up the Planet Map or zoom out to bring up the Starmap.
Starmap
The Starmap is widest map view in Starfield. It’s essentially a map of the Settled Systems, showing all the star systems in the game and where they are in relation to each other. The Starmap is where you’ll plan and initiate fast travel grav jump routes to different systems.
The Starmap encompasses a collection of roughly 100 stars (including our solar system, known as Sol) within which human civilisation exists in major settlements like New Atlantis, Neon, Cydonia, The Key, and Akila City.
How big is the Starfield map compared to Skyrim?
It’s hard to define the size of the Starfield map because it encompasses over 100 stars and over 1000 individual planets that aren’t stitched together like a conventional open-world map. It’s likely the largest map we’ve seen from a Bethesda game to date given all the explorable areas.
A large number of these planets are not fully-designed content. Bethesda has made significant use of procedural generation to create terrain, creatures, and other elements of each world. The developer then handcrafted a specific set of locations and structures for a limited selection of planets, cities, and settlements.
