Though Once Human’s world isn’t lacking in food sources, every little helps. One alternative is fishing, a staple of any survival crafting game worth its weight. Given that the map is basically a huge island landmass with snaking rivers and sitting ponds, there are plenty of opportunities to supplement your meta-human’s diet with some aquatic goodness.

Given the overwhelming glut of systems and mechanics, it can be a little tough to figure out, so we’ll walk you through how to fish. Check out our top tips and tricks if you’re struggling in the early game.

How to get a fishing rod

First things first, you’ll need a fishing rod. To begin, you’ll need to progress far enough to unlock the Memetics menu. Once there, open it up and head to the Crafting tab and unlock the Essential Tools skill and get access to the Supplies Workbench. Head back to your Territory base and build the workbench using x2 Log (available from trees) and x20 Copper Ore (mined from Copper Ore nodes).

Interact with the Supplies Workbench and select the Fishing Rod from the recipes on the left. To make it, you’ll need x20 Log and x10 Copper Ingot. Tap F to craft. Head to your inventory by tapping the i key and place the Fishing Rod into the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

How to make bait

Now you have a Fishing Rod, you’ll need to craft bait to attract fish. Interact with the Supplies Workbench and select Dough Fish Bait. Each bait requires x1 Corn.

You can get Corn from farms in the starting Dayton Wetlands region, namely Citrus County to the northwest of Deadsville. I recommend crafting as many as you can as fishing can be a bit tricky at first.

How to catch fish

Now for the actual fishing. Note that you can only fish in larger rivers, streams, and lakes. A good place to get your bearings is the pier just south of Meyer’s Market in the Broken Delta region. To start, select the Fishing Rod from your toolbar and click the left mouse button to extend it. Press R and select the Dough Fish Bait to equip it to the rod.

Click the left mouse button and release it to cast the line into the water. Left click when the circle icon at the bottom starts to glow green and before the gauge runs out. This starts the fishing mini-game proper.

Note the two bars in the bottom right of the screen: Escaped-Hooked and Break-Slack. To catch a fish, you’ll want to make sure the top bar is moving towards Hooked and the lower one never reaches Break. You can do this by gently aiming the fishing rod in the opposite direction to where the fish or eel is pulling while also tapping left click to turn the reel. Once the Hooked gauge fills up, you’ll catch the fish and have the option to collect it for cooking or release it.
