According to the Call of Duty website, “If you preorder or purchase a Physical Edition of Modern Warfare 3, you cannot upgrade to a Vault Edition.” If you’re looking to pick up a digital copy of the game, you can upgrade to the Vault Edition through the Vault Upgrade. However, this is only possible using the same platform that you used to purchase the game.
So if you bought the game from Steam for PC, you can only upgrade to Vault Edition using that platform’s purchasing system. This is fairly straightforward and makes a bit of sense. As aforesaid, upgrading to the Vault Edition is currently not possible if you purchased a physical copy of the game – despite the only difference being digital upgrades.
