As you traverse No Man’s Sky’s procedural worlds, you’ll come across a glut of Multi-Tools, each with their own set of slots and upgrades. You can collect and hold up to six of them at any given time, but No Man’s Sky doesn’t do a great job laying out how to switch Multi-Tool. This can be particularly confusing for new players who may think they’ve irretrievably lost their favourite Multi-Tool when accepting a new one from a pushy Vy’Keen at some far-flung outpost. Due to how new Multi-Tools are added to your collection (it replaces your currently equipped tool) players are led to think they’ve sacrificed their original tool in acquiring the new one. Fortunately, this isn’t the case, and once you know how, jumping between Multi-Tools is dead easy.

How to swap your Multi-Tool in No Man’s Sky

You can switch Multi-Tool in No Man’s Sky by using the quick menu. Here’s how to do it step-by-step:

  • Tap X on PC or Down on the D-pad on Console to bring it up.
  • Navigate to the last option on the left called Utilities, represented by a gear icon.
  • Select it, then navigate to the last option on your left called Swap Multi-Tool, with, you guessed it, an icon of a Multi-Tool.
  • Again, select it to bring up all the Multi-Tools you currently own.
  • From here, scroll to the want you want to use and tap select one final time.

The Swap Multi-Tool portion of the quick menu can be brought up at any point in the game except when operating a vehicle, whether a starship or exocraft. To simplify swapping between Multi-Tools, you can also Quick Bind them if you’re playing on PC. To do this, navigate to the Swap Multi-Tool portion of the quick menu. Select a Multi-Tool, hold Ctrl, then tap any number from 0 to 9 on your keyboard to create the bind. Exit the menu, and you can now jump between tools simply by tapping the assigned number.
