Looking for news on the Frostpunk 2 release date? The original frosty city-builder survival game was a hit when it first released back in 2018, but with news of a sequel on the horizon, fans are itching to get their hands on the next entry in the society survival game series which will take place 30 years on from the original.

When will Frostpunk 2 release?
We don’t have a confirmed release date for Frostpunk 2 yet, but we expect to see it come out in early 2024. Rumours of a release date of 2 January 2024 briefly gained traction after a supposed leak on SteamDB, but developers 11 Bit Studios were quick to dispute this.
However, fake leaks aside, we do know that Frostpunk 2 is at least scheduled to release in 2024 thanks to confirmation from a trailer shown at the 2023 PC Gaming Show. Given that the game has been in development for several years now, we don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a release in the first half of 2024, if not in the first quarter. However, until we get more news from 11 bit studios, this is all just speculation unfortunately.
What platforms will Frostpunk 2 be on?
Frostpunk 2 is currently set to release on PC, and will be available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.com. At the time of writing, there is no news on whether or not there will be Xbox and PlayStation ports of the game. The first game was initially released on PC only, before receiving console ports around six months later, so we wouldn’t be surprised if 11 bit studios chooses to do the same with the sequel.
Frostpunk 2 gameplay
The only trailers we’ve seen so far have been purely cinematic, so we don’t actually know too much about the gameplay of Frostpunk 2. We know that the game will be set around 30 years after the first game and focus on the problems posed by petroleum use, but that’s about it. However, it’s likely that the core gameplay will largely be the same as it was in Frostpunk, but with the addition of new gameplay features and mechanics/
Game Co-Director and Design Director Jakub Stokalski, said of the Frostpunk 2 that “Players will be facing new kinds of threats that are beyond the bare survival from the first game”, and that the post-apocalyptic setup will be a vehicle to “tell a meaningful story about human ambition, societies striving for their ideas, and the consequences of hard decisions which are not always respected by everyone.”
Rather than the survival focus of the first game, Frostpunk 2 has much more of a story focus, heavily engaging with its setting and the people that live there. 11 bit studios commented on the changes in the 30 years since the first game, with a press release saying that “once [the people] feel like they’ve tamed the frost, and the bonding survival instinct has faded, their human nature will come into play, driven by ambition that could spiral The City into the fall.” These “inner turmoils” create social differences that add a new layer to the game, giving players more complex issues to resolve beyond that of the first game.
Frostpunk 2 trailers
The first Frostpunk 2 trailer came out in 2021. It features a frozen wasteland dotted with multiple oil rigs, as well as the frozen, upright corpse of a man with the word ‘WAR’ written on his chest in what appears to be either blood or oil. In the background, a tannoy blares out a speech about the importance of ‘making sacrifices’.
The second trailer came at 2023’s PC Gaming Show, and is set in the city of New London. It shows the development of the city over the 30 years between the games. Later on in the trailer, it appears to show the city engulfed in riots, with fires burning everywhere and molotov cocktails being thrown.
