Baldur’s Gate 3 story

Based predominantly on the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 seeks to tell a new story set in the Forgotten Realms, making it a good jumping-on point for newcomers to the series. There will still be some connections to previous games in the series of course.

The story is going to primarily revolve around the returning Mind Flayers, who have once more found a way to travel between worlds and are quite keen on invasion. Following a spectacular opening battle between the Mind Flayers, Demons, and Githyanki, your player character and main companions become infected with parasites that should turn you into Mind Flayers yourselves, but don’t. Instead, your party gains some latent psionic powers, allowing you to connect minds, and begin a quest to understand what happened with the parasites, and how to remove them before your luck runs out.

We can also expect the city of Baldur’s Gate itself to feature of course, though it’s likely that the player will only have access to relevant sections, rather than a massive open-world vista where the metropolis of the game’s namesake is concerned.

Baldur’s Gate 3 trailers

We’ve had a few short trailers come out for the game, building yet more anticipation for the Baldur’s Gate release date. Both of these can be found on the game’s Steam page.

The first is the reveal trailer, which officially announced the game.

The second, meanwhile, is a gameplay trailer, highlighting in-game footage which prepared players for the experience and story elements ahead of the early access period.

Both highlight some characters, story, and gameplay footage, giving players a great sense of the world they can expect to dive into. Your main character for this party can start as either what Larian calls an “origin character”, a pre-built hero with a backstory and skills, or as a custom-made character using the character creation tools like the character sheet at your disposal. Here are our Baldur’s Gate 3 character creation and Baldur’s Gate 3 multiclass guides to get up to speed.

Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay

Baldur’s Gate 3 is staying true to the roots of the series in its third iteration. The game at its core will be a party-based RPG, relying on your ability to think tactically and manage a group of characters, their skills, abilities, weaknesses, and equipment to overcome foes.

Baldur’s Gate 3 combat

Combat sticks to the classic D&D turn-based formula, but takes on a stronger sandbox approach. You’ll be able to use just about any random object you find as a weapon when in a tight spot, for example. The game also has multiple difficulty settings to choose from.

In and outside of combat you’ll also have dice rolls to act as skill checks, just like the game’s tabletop counterpart. Some of these will be passive skill checks that the game will perform for you, others will require you to roll dice on screen. And while outside of combat will usually be realtime, you’ll have some capability to switch into a turn-based mode for acts that require an extra bit of strategy.

Multiplayer will be making an appearance too, with the game even supporting split-screen co-op for two players. Up to four players can team up online. It’s a nice throwback to the LAN parties that used to be a common sight. And since party members can wander off separately, you can explore different parts of Faerun at the same time. Just remember that combat isn’t going to be easier if you go through it solo.

Baldur’s Gate 3 character interactions and customization

Character interactions and dynamics play a big part outside of combat too, helping to flesh out the experience and keep players immersed. You can dictate these dynamics through a selection of different dialogue options and skill checks with party members and other NPCs. You can even romance party members, creating emotionally and physically intimate moments, if you want to.

Baldur’s Gate 3 character creation is a journey in itself. Here are some things you can tinker with when you create a custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3:

Classes

While there will no doubt be plenty of gear and loot to make use of, the game is also set to have a variety of classes to choose from in order to complete the faithful D&D experience. Baldur’s Gate 3 classes are further subdivided into subclasses with even more unique perks. There are 12 total classes to pick from.

Each of these classes have unique capabilities and fighting styles, and of course, all come from D&D. The subclasses add extra flavour to these characters. For instance, the Gloom Ranger and the Trickery Domain Cleric are neat variants of base classes. You’ll have plenty of options when it comes to choosing how you fight your battles and how you experience your adventure.

Races

Race in Baldur’s Gate 3 has more of an impact than you might expect. While you do get some changes in stats, your race will also alter dialogue options. For example, the Githyanki’s thirst for vengeance against the Mind Flayers will provide unique conversations. The Dragonborn’s past as a race will also have implications on how dialogue plays out. Here are the confirmed Baldur’s Gate 3 races.

Backgrounds

Backgrounds give your characters a past in Baldur’s Gate 3. Picking a background grants you proficiency bonuses in two skills and lets you perform certain tasks to gain Inspiration and reroll dice rolls. For instance, a Sage would gain Inspiration from reading arcane texts. Here are the confirmed Baldur’s Gate 3 backgrounds.

Companions

Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of companions who might aid you on your journey. They add versatility to your party composition with unique class traits and perks. Here are the confirmed Baldur’s Gate 3 companions so far. Shadowheart has quickly gained a following for her versatility in combat.
