Mistakes are to be expected from beginners in any game out there. However, the scope of potential errors is much higher in a game like Final Fantasy XIV, a game so expansive that so many beginners end up being overwhelmed.

There are seven mistakes in particular that we believe are the most common ones of them all, and they might stop beginner players from truly enjoying the full FFXIV.

We’re here to highlight all seven of those mistakes, as well as go a little in depth on what you can do to avoid these mistakes.

1. Choosing the Wrong Server

Every time a player starts the game for the first time, they’re asked to select a server to play on. More often than not, players choose to play on servers that they know their friends or other acquaintances already play on.

However, the better thing to do is to play on the server the game identifies as the one preferred for you. Playing on a server that isn’t preferred for you has the potential to give you some major connection problems, such as ping spikes and lag.

Additionally, FFXIV is an MMORPG, which means hit registration and ping both play huge roles in every player’s experience. Having something wrong with them will lead to the game’s enjoyment being significantly dwindled.

2. Rushing the Main Story

MMORPGs aren’t like story-driven, single-player games, even if FFXIV has one of the most critically acclaimed stories in gaming. Instead, it’s very important to do side quests, level up your jobs, experiment with other jobs, and so so much more.

Unfortunately, many players tend to rush only the main story, may that be because they aren’t interested in doing side quests or ‘filler content’, or maybe because they, like so many of us, have heard that the beginning of FFXIV is extremely slow, and they want to rush to the good part.

We definitely recommend you refrain from doing this, as by rushing to the destination, you’ll miss the magic of the journey.

3. Trying to Use Potions on Party Members

All of us have stocked up on potions and other restorative items before tackling our first dungeons. Then, mid-dungeon we try using our resources on our party members without realizing we can’t heal others with them.

FFXIV does have a plethora of restorative items players can either find or purchase, but if you try to use one of them mid-dungeon with the intent of saving a fellow party member, you’ll be very disappointed when you realize your character uses it instead.

Instead, if you really do want to be able to consistently heal your party members when in dungeons, we recommend you do some research on the many healer classes present in the game. Who knows, they might just be right up your alley.

4. Not Doing Job Quests

This one kind of correlates with mistake number 2, but it’s such a major mistake so many players make that we felt it deserved its own spot. Every 5 levels, players unlock what is called job quests.

What players might not know, however, is that completing job quests rewards players with new abilities for that specific job. So if you’ve ever complained about the game not having enough abilities for you to use, now you know why.

5. Walking to the Waking Sands

The Waking Sands is the original base of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, and that’s all well and good. One problem though. You’ll be finding yourself having to go there a lot, like more times than we could count.

While most beginners walk all the way there every single time they’re tasked to, what they don’t know is they could have been avoiding this process all this time. Yes, Chocobo riding and gliding take a while to unlock, but those aren’t the only modes of transport.

Instead, it would be much quicker to use Limsa Lominsa’s aetheryte to warp to the Arcanist’s Guild, then take the nearby ferry to Vesper Bay. Not only that, but it’s also possible to get aetheryte tickets by completing quests in ARR to teleport there instantly, saving you so much time in the process.

6. Neglecting the Hunting Log

When attempting to level up a secondary class, players tend to grind by taking out hordes of mobs. Well, what if we told you there was a way to quicken up the process by a huge margin if you just used your hunting log?

Instead of mindlessly hunting whatever mob came your way to get a minuscule amount of experience for your new job, it’s much better to hunt a specific type of mob instead to get more than double that.

7. Buying from the Market Board

We can not stress how many players end up purchasing items, materials, and gear from the market board instead of vendors. The market board is notorious for overpricing the most common of things.

When looking at an item description, on the bottom there will be a line reading “Shop Selling Price”, which will have a specific price in Gil as well. This is some important information, as this is the price you’ll find that item being sold by vendors.

However, many players tend to purchase or find these same items, increase the price by a lot to make an insane amount of profit, and then sell them to unsuspecting beginner players who don’t even realize they were scammed until much later.

The good thing is that mistakes are to be expected from beginner players, but by playing, learning, and being better at the game, you’ll gradually start identifying these mistakes and then correcting them.
