Is Final Fantasy 16 open world? Square Enix’s big return to the Final Fantasy series offers players a brand new adventure in the shoes of the broody Clive, a regal’s son endowed with the powers of fiery Eikon Ifrit. This all takes place in the land of Valisthea, a high fantasy playground full dragons, goblins, memorable characters, towering Eikons, and quite a few twists and turns.

Here, we’ll explain what you can expect from Final Fantasy 16’s Valisthea, and explain whether or not it is open world or not. If you’re just starting up the game checkout our primer on how long is Final Fantasy 16 and learn how to get a chocobo in Final Fantasy 16.

Does Final Fantasy 16 have an open world?

Final Fantasy 16 has what we’d call a semi-open world, but is not an open-world game. You aren’t free to explore every nook and cranny as you would in say Zelda Tears of the Kingdom or Horizon Forbidden West.

Instead, Final Fantasy 16 is broken down into four distinct regions – Rosaria, Sanbreque, Dhalmekia, and Waloed. These are reasonably sized, but are made up of strict paths and areas beyond which you can’t venture.

You can hop from region to region, but they aren’t connected in an open world way. Once you’ve reached one, you can explore it either on foot or by riding a chocobo, but there are hard limits on where you can and can’t go. Additionally, certain parts only unlock once you’ve reached specific story milestones. They are very similar to the realms in God of War Ragnarok, for example.

That covers the question of is Final Fantasy 16 open world.
