No, Dragon’s Dogma 2 does not have a Hard difficulty setting. Instead, it dynamically adapts to the player to maintain a sense of challenge. This is based on an interview between Reno Gazette-Journal and Hideaki Itsuno, the game director at Capcom.
During this interview, Itsuno stated that they “put in a system that optimizes the difficulty according to the player.” Itsuno also stated that they feel that they’ve “added some difficulty that people will enjoy as far as the role-playing elements that require you to play a character within a specific role.” Note that this isn’t the same as level scaling as we noticed enemies being easy to vanquish once we leveled up in-game.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 challenges the player in other ways as well. For instance, an enemy lock-on isn’t available for most attacks except spells. Fast travel is limited, be it via precious resources or ox carts that meet monsters more often than their destination. Battahl’s ropeways tend to hand you over to Griffins for lunch. As for finding secrets, you’ll need to rely on statues in Dragon’s Dogma 2. And while dragons can be tough to fight, the real problem is the spread of dragonsplague.
Can you change the difficulty in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
No, DD2 does not have a toggle between difficulty options like Easy, Medium, and Hard. The game will automatically fine-tune the difficulty to match your playstyle in various ways – making it more or less difficult as you progress. During our time with the game, we didn’t notice any major difficulty spikes. While the boss fights can take a while due to the massive health bars you need to clear, they weren’t absurdly difficult and didn’t need us to memorize attack patterns.
The original title featured three modes that ranged from easy to hard with the hard mode being added later on with Dark Arisen. The second title does not follow the same route as there are no difficulty settings to choose from. Instead, there is a constant difficulty that is maintained throughout the game.
You won’t be fighting alone though. Your pawns, hireable allies, will be able to take up vocations like the Mage, Thief, and Archer to dispel monsters and collect rewards from chests. You’ll be able to meet them in New Game Plus as you rack up XP and discipline points with Arisen-exclusive classes like the Mystic Spearhand.
