What are Helltides in Diablo 4?

Helltides are in-game events in Diablo 4 that last for 60 minutes and cover regions of the map with fiendish energy. This indicates a demonic presence that stirs Lilith’s minions, granting them extra power and strength. They are only accessible in World Tier Three: Nightmare difficulty or higher. Access these difficulties by clearing Diablo 4 Capstone Dungeons like the Cathedral of Light. Helltides usually last for an hour before receding and chances are that you’ll spot multiple Helltides across the map.

Does grinding for legendary items amidst demonic activity and Lilith’s mightiest minions sound like your definition of a good time? These demonic events, marked as Helltide zones across Sanctuary’s open world, are region-wide events that can happen in any of Diablo 4’s five regions: Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, Kehjistan, Scosglen, and Hawezar.

Diablo 4 Helltides challenge your skills with beefed-up enemies that offer more than just extra XP. Each enemy under the influence of a Helltide can drop Aberrant Cinders. This new currency is used to unlock Tortured Gifts of Mysteries, chests that appear in a region under the influence of Helltides. They have different requirements based on the equipment present in them. Open Helltide chests for new loot drops like legendary boots, gloves, chest armor, pants, jewelry, and two-handed weapons. Helltides also offer unique crafting materials like the Fiend Rose.

How to join a Helltide

To participate in a Helltide event, all you need to do is be on World Tier Nightmare or higher and step into the Helltide area on the map. As soon as you’re in the area, you are part of the Helltides.

Helltides can be found on the map whenever they’re active by the red that overtakes the zone. This red highlight will stay until the Helltide is over. Use a waypoint to travel to them or take your mount if you’re close.

Helltide bosses in Diablo 4 explained

You’ll find bosses, called Helltide Commanders, roaming about in a Helltide. They’ll have unique names and properties too like Kixxarth the Helltide Assassin and Nemnos the Helltide Commander. The former is rather annoying as his minimum level is 72, irrespective of what level you are. He will be marked with a horned skull icon on the minimap. As for Nemnos, he’s part of a Portal Invasion event and is an easier target. Defeating them will give you some sweet loot alongside a ton of Aberrant Cinders. This makes the grind for opening chests less of a hassle.

The Portal Invasion event starts with Occultists trying to perform a ritual. Slay them and Invasion Portals begin to spawn in demons. Clear these and then a Helltide Commander boss will fight you. Other local events can happen in a Helltide too. These special events are marked by orange circles and are surefire ways to rake up Aberrant Cinders for Helltide mystery chests.

How to get Forgotten Souls in Diablo 4?

Defeating enemies and opening mystery chests in a Helltide gives you a chance to get Forgotten Souls. This item is used to improve Sacred and Ancestral items. Clear a few Helltides and you’ll be able to upgrade your entire gear.

Diablo 4 Helltides chests and rewards list

Here’s a list of the Helltides chests, how much they cost, and what rewards they provide in Diablo 4:

  • Tortured Gift of Protection (Helms, Chest Armor, Gloves, Legguards, Boots) – 75 Aberrant Cinders
  • Tortured Gift of Jewelry (rings and amulets) – 125 Aberrant Cinders
  • Tortured Gift of One-Handed Weapons (Weapons and Off-Hands) – 125 Aberrant Cinders
  • Tortured Gift of Two-Handed Weaponry (Two-Handed Weapons) – 150 Aberrant Cinders
  • Tortured Gift of Mysteries (various items) – 250 Aberrant Cinders

The final mystery chest offers an assortment of items that can even include Sacred and Ancestral gear.

While Helltides can be tough without a party of friendly adventurers, Tortured Gifts and the potential legendary rewards within them are certainly worth the risk. Luck out and you might even end up with exotic Ancestral gear.
