Want to know how to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3? As you explore the Forgotten Realms, there will be times when your party absolutely needs to rest. Be it to restore health or spell slots, there are two kinds of rests you can consider in Larian Studios’ latest RPG.

How to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3?

You can take a Long Rest at the camp in Baldur’s Gate 3. Short Rests can be taken outside of combat in the game world. These rests require different resources and restore your party to varying degrees. Considering that you can take two Short Rests before a Long Rest, I’d suggest using Short Rests first.

Short Rest in BG3 explained

Short Rests don’t need resources and only replenish a moderate amount of health. Depending on which class you pick, you can also replenish some other resources. For instance, Warlocks can replenish some of their spell points with a Shong Rest. At higher levels, a Bard can restore Bardic Inspiration charges with a Short Rest too. Short Rests let you rest anywhere so use them whenever you need them. If you’re not terribly wounded, you can also get to maximum HP with a Short Rest alone.

Here’s what a Short Rest restores in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• Some amount of health for party members
• Bard’s Bardic Inspiration charges
• Cleric Channel Divinity charges
• Druid’s Wild Shape charges
• Fighter’s Second Wind and Action Surge. Battle Master’s Superiority Die
• Monk’s Ki Points
• Paladin’s Channel Oath charges
• Sorcerer’s Tides of Chaos
• Warlock’s spell slots

To Short Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3, click the campfire icon at the bottom of the screen. A closed eye with two blue dots will indicate that you have two Short Rests until the next Long Rest. Classes like the Rogue don’t have any resources to recharge on a Short Rest.

Long Rest in BG3 explained

You need 40 Camp Supplies to take a Long Rest. The party can use a lower amount but this will not completely refresh your party’s resources. You won’t get two Short Rests for the next day. Your characters can get Camp Supplies from chests and loot scattered across the world of Faerun. In addition to that, you can buy them from vendors. 

Here’s what a Long Rest replenishes in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• Party health points (hit points)
• Party spell slots (like Wizards and Sorcerers among others)
• All resources that a Short Rest would recover

To perform a Long Rest in BG3, click the fire icon next to the turn-based mode button at the bottom of your HUD. This opens up the campsite menu. The crescent moon icon is the Long Rest. Once you’re in camp, you can interact with the campfire or one of the bed rolls. Note that Long Rests also progress some quest storylines. 

For instance, if you ignore the burning inn at Waukeen’s Rest after the Risen Road in Act 1, a Long Rest will have consequences. Long Rests also help you have conversations with Baldur’s Gate 3 Guardian. At camp, you can also figure out how to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3 from Withers.
