In a massive cRPG with all sorts of adversaries and companions, levelling up unlocks new opportunities for your party. With that, read on to learn more about the max level cap in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3 Max Level: A few characters standing next to a broken wagon on a road.

What’s the max level in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The max level that players can currently reach is Level 12 in Baldur’s Gate 3. While that might not sound like much, D&D’s level-up mechanics are more elaborate than most RPG titles. One can’t compare the typical level cap with the one offered to Baldur’s Gate 3 spellcasters. You’ll gain a wide range of skills and perks, letting you handle enemies and quests that you previously couldn’t.

While the devs, Larian Studio, had “originally planned for Level 10 to be the highest character level in the game,” they decided to add two additional levels, raising the cap to 12. “Too many rad high-level spells would have been left just out of reach had we done so.” This lets players get access to more spells in the endgame like Planar Allies, Chain Lightning, and Otto’s Irresistible Dance. Considering that the traditional max level of most Dungeons & Dragons campaigns is level 20, the 12-level cut-off may seem arbitrary. However, it perfectly fits the scope of the game.

✓ Higher levels with mods

Ever since modding support was added to the game, modders have released several level cap mods to add even more beyond level 12. Some are more intricate than others, adding detailed class and subclass progression, and even new high-level spells.

Levelling up lets you access the best skills for Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and subclasses like the Fighter, the Cleric, and the Monk. Remember to pair them with the best races to synergize their strengths.
