In anticipation of the Meta Quest event starting on September 27th, let’s take a closer look at Meta’s choice of pricing for its upcoming Quest 3 VR headset. Has the original price dropped in some countries, and what’s the general consensus on Meta’s pricing for the Quest 3?

The Quest 3 was announced back in June, promptly followed by a pre-order period that will last until the Quest 3 release date. After the Zucc teased a new VR headset on his Instagram story, Meta formally introduced the Quest 3 as a powerful new upgrade that would cost $499 USD / £499 for the 128GB model. To put that into perspective, Quest 3 will be Meta’s most expensive consumer headset so far.

However, there have been some changes in pricing since the original announcement. While the US price appears firmly set at $499, the UK price has silently dropped to £479.99, as seen via Meta’s website. We’ve noticed a similar drop in European countries including France, Italy and Germany from €569.99 to €549.99. In Canada meanwhile, expect to pay $689.99 CAD. Meta is yet to confirm pricing for its second, “additional storage option”, though we’ll probably learn this at the Meta Connect event on Wednesday.

For better or worse, the Quest 3 will cost $100 more than the Quest 2 did at launch. Whether or not the premium price is warranted is yet to be seen. When we compared what we knew about the Quest 3 vs Quest 2, the improvements so far look promising, especially with the promise of a slimmer profile and more powerful processing chip.

Is the Quest 3 price worth it?

Let’s make the facts clear – the Quest 3 is expected to deliver a 30% jump in resolution, increase processing power and be 40% thinner than the Quest 2. The new controllers are also a big potential upgrade, with tracking significantly improved thanks to new infrared LEDs in the controller, and the option for controller-free hand tracking thanks to the Quest 3’s depth sensor. But is all this actually worth it for around $500?

Considering we’re still in the infancy of VR, the generational improvements between VR headsets is always going to big. The Quest 2 remains tempting though. It shares the same battery life as the Quest 3, according to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth via Instagram, and is available for just $299. The Quest 3 might become more worth it in the future as more developers make Quest 3 exclusive games, but for now, the Quest 2 still remains one of the best VR headsets in 2023.

It’s also worth comparing the $499 price tag to all the other VR headsets on the market – check it out in the table below:

VR Headset Price (USD)
Apple Vision Pro (unreleased)$3,500
Valve Index (full VR Kit)$1,470
HTC Vive XR Elite$1,099
Meta Quest Pro$999
HTC Vive Pro 2 $799
Sony PlayStation VR2$599
Meta Quest 3$499
HP Reverb G2$499
Meta Quest 2 $299

The above table should give some insight into where the Meta Quest 3 sits compared to other VR headsets on the market. For further insight, we’ve compared the Quest 3 to the Apple Vision Pro and PSVR 2.
