Instagram Threads seems to be picking up speed, but since its launch, a few features have been lacking. So can you DM on Instagram Threads? Or if you’re feeling cheeky, can you slide into DMs on Instagram Threads?
Instagram Threads seems to be off to a flying start if you’re looking solely at the record numbers of users downloading the app and joining the platform. Introduced as Instagram’s response to Twitter, people are curious to see whether Threads is really the Twitter Killer everyone is saying it is. There’s definitely been some positive reception, though the app is sparse in features at this early stage. At the time of writing, there’s no built-in GIF support (though there are ways around it) and you can’t even use hashtags yet. And then what’s up with the DMs feature? Let’s take a closer look.
For better or worse, you cannot DM or privately message people on Threads. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said that a messaging feature at this time is a “maybe” when he mentioned some of the basics currently missing on Threads. Given that Instagram already has its own messaging inbox, it makes sense why having two inboxes could get a bit confusing or overwhelming.
Will Threads have direct message?
There is currently no direct messaging feature on Threads, to the disappointment of some. Unlike Twitter which allows you to slide into DMs, Threads only allows you to post and reply. For DMs, you’ll have to use Instagram’s DM feature, which is conveniently easy to jump to on the Threads app via your Threads profile page. In the event that a DMs feature does come to Threads, make sure you keep your app up-to-date so you can easily access the feature.
