For those wondering if the much RTX 4070 can do 8K, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to look at all of the speculation and rumours surrounding this.

With the release of the 4090 back in October 2022, 8K has been the benchmark on everyone’s minds. Then, a month later, the 4080 was released and it could sort of do 8K. It certainly wasn’t marketed by Nvidia for the job, like the 4090 was. Then the 4070 Ti arrived on the scene.

For the 4070 Ti, 8K was not part of the marketing, and all the advertised performance benchmarks were tested at 4K. Since then, gamers have had the time to test out for themselves if the 4070 Ti can manage 8K. The general verdict seems to be towards the stick to 4K spectrum. So, what does that mean for the RTX 4070?

Let’s get into it.

Can the RTX 4070 manage 8K?

The RTX 4070 specs have been announced now. Based on these, we think that while an RTX 4070 may well be able to manage 8K display, we’re not sure if, in the current way it seems to be shaping up, an RTX 4070 will be able to run games at 8K with efficiency. Let’s unpack that a bit.

Current 40-series 8K gaming GPUs

The only 40 series GPU currently marketed at the time of writing for 8K gaming performance is the 4090. A while back we did a specs comparison between the 4090 and the 4070. In that comparison, we saw that the CUDA core count of the 4070 seemed to be roughly a third of the CUDA core count of the 4090. The Base Clock speeds also came out at roughly 600 MHz less than the 4090 with half the GDDR6X VRAM to boot… but we then had a look at the 4070 Ti.

The 4070 Ti comes out with roughly half the CUDA cores of the 4090, half the VRAM, and roughly 200 MHz less Base Clock speeds. Furthermore, we’re not expecting the 4070 to exceed the 4070 Ti. With this in mind, we don’t think it’s likely that the 4070 will be any more able to achieve native gaming 8K than the 4070 Ti, particularly when compared against the only truly marketed for 8K 40 series gaming GPU, the 4090.

Put that way, the way the specs for the 4070 are shaping up, we don’t think an RTX 4070 would be able to natively game at 8K. However, as always, we’re hopeful. We could be wrong. (We’d like to be wrong.)

Frequently Asked Questions

What refresh rate could the RTX 4070 do 8K at?

Nothing has been confirmed regarding an RTX 4070 so there are no official specs to provide this information. However, the RTX 4070 Ti can achieve 8K at 60Hz with DSC, so we would tentatively suggest 8K at 60Hz with DSC or lower as a prediction for an RTX 4070 model.

What is 8K?

8K is a display resolution of 7680 x 4320. The greater number of pixels allow for a much sharper image. 8K is considered very high quality for graphics.
