The RTX 4070 Ti is an apt choice for comparing to the RTX 4070. As their names suggest they are quite similar cards. Both are part of Nvidia’s 40-series of GPUs, a range of cards that are exceptionally powerful and capable, especially when it comes to ray tracing.

They also sit next to each other in the range in terms of price, meaning that this is a comparison many gamers will be making as they decide what next-gen GPU they want to go for.

We’ll be breaking our comparison down into key categories and comparing what we know about the GPUs in each one. This should give you a sense of each graphics card and could help you know whether you’ll want to try and get your hands on an RTX 4070. Let’s get into it.

RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – specs

Stream Processors / CUDA Cores76805,888
Boost Clock 2.61 GHz2,475MHz
Base Clock 2,310MHz1,920MHz

As you can see from the table above there are plenty of both similarities and differences between the two cards. However, you’ll also notice that where there is a difference, it’s the RTX 4070 Ti that has the higher spec. This is no surprise as it is a higher-end card.

The base and boost clock speeds of each GPU are not worlds apart though the 4070 Ti’s 2.61GHz boost speed will translate the better all-around performance, particularly in the most demanding games.

On the flip side, it’s nice to see that the RTX 4070 will carry the same 12GB of GDDR6X memory as the RTX 4070 Ti. We haven’t seen any official benchmarks for the new card but having the same memory count goes some way to balancing the playing field between them both.

RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – architecture

As both GPUs are part of the GeForce 40-series, they come with the same groundbreaking Ada Lovelace architecture. This means 3rd generation Ray Tracing cores and 4th generation Tensor cores. The latter partly helps with AI-powered features such as DLSS. This feature uses AI deep learning algorithms to boost performance by increasing efficiency. This means you can get more power from the same hardware.

Essentially the fact that both the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Ti have the same architecture tells you that they are built from the same parts – the same cores, encoders and shading technology. Where they differ is in how many of them they have, with the RTX 4070 Ti tending to have more, and thus an improved overall performance

RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – performance

We don’t have any of our own benchmarks for the RTX 4070 yet, so we can’t be as precise here as usual. However, we have enough information to know pretty accurately how the RTX 4070 will perform.

It will be a powerful mid-performance graphics card, mid for the RTX 40-series that is. It will outperform the RTX 3070 and is hot on the heels of the RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 with DLSS enabled. This means competitive-level frame rates in 1080p, over 144fps at QHD and even decent speeds at 4K.

This is what we see from the RTX 4070 Ti too, though you can of course expect better performance across the board.

This is of course complicated further by the fact that there are a tonne of different 4070 Ti graphics cards by a tonne of different tech retailers. The best RTX 4070 Ti cards, however, will have good power efficiency and high frame rates in 1440p, especially if you pair one with the best CPU for the RTX 4070 Ti.

RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – price

The MSRP of the RTX 4070 is $599. This puts quite a bit of distance between it and the RTX 4070 Ti, making the RTX 4070 easily the cheapest desktop 40-series GPU.

The RTX 4070 Ti meanwhile is $799. This made it, at the time of its release, the most budget-friendly way to get a hold of the Lovelace architecture, however it looks set to be usurped and undercut by the RTX 4070.

Neither of these prices are exactly cheap but they do reflect the performance of each card, both of which are seriously powerful.

RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – which one should you go for?

The RTX 4070 is the cheapest way to get your hands on Nvidia’s new architecture and its performance packs quite a punch. Similarly, the RTX 4070 Ti is a great upper mid-range card with high specs and superior performance.

It all comes down to the performance you are looking for. If you want something slightly higher and don’t mind paying for it, the RTX 4070 Ti will get higher frame rates across the board. However, the RTX 4070’s price is impressively low and you can still use it to game at 4K.

Frequently asked questions

Will the RTX 4070 be good at ray tracing?

The RTX 4070 will have excellent ray tracing performance. Nvidia has been leading the way with this technology and the Ada Lovelace architecture inside the RTX 4070 is designed to excel at it.

Does the RTX 4070 Ti have DLSS 3?

Yes, the RTX 4070 Ti is compatible with DLSS 3. This technology can significantly improve frame rates in games which are compatible with it.
