Mike Straw, editor-in-chief of Insider Gaming, recently relayed that WWE 2K26’s Showcase mode allegedly focuses on CM Punk, featuring three distinct playable sections. Straw has now also revealed that he’s heard WWE 2K26 is introducing four new match types, including the long-awaited returns of I Quit and Inferno.

According to Straw, the four match types set to be introduced are I Quit, Inferno, Three Stages of Hell, and Dumpster. Both I Quit and Inferno matches were last seen in WWE 2K14, released in October 2013, meaning they have been absent for over a decade.

An I Quit match is a bout that only ends when one wrestler says, “I quit,” usually into a microphone held by the referee. As for Inferno, this is a one-on-one match where all four sides of the ring apron are surrounded by fire, and you win by setting your opponent ablaze.

As for Three Stages of Hell, this hasn’t appeared in any WWE 2K game outside of the WWE 2K15 Showcase mode featuring Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels. Three Stages of Hell consists of three individual matches played back-to-back, each with different stipulations.

The most recent example was Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre on the January 9, 2026, edition of SmackDown. The match played out with McIntyre winning a regular one-on-one match, Cody winning the subsequent Falls Count Anywhere bout, and McIntyre ending the Three Stages of Hell by winning the final stage, a Steel Cage match.

Finally, a Dumpster match requires you to win by throwing your opponent inside a dumpster full of trash. A Dumpster match has never appeared in the WWE 2K series, including anything exclusive to Showcase mode, making this an entirely new match type.

WWE 2K26’s rumored new match types revive nostalgic classics

Assuming these rumored match types are accurate, WWE 2K26 would be reviving nostalgic classics with I Quit and Inferno, while also introducing entirely new content with Three Stages of Hell and Dumpster matches.

It’s likely that Inferno, I Quit, and Dumpster matches will play similarly to match types introduced in WWE 2K24, such as Ambulance and Casket matches. Players will likely need to damage their opponent as much as possible before attempting to set them on fire, throw them into a dumpster, or force them to quit.

To win, players will probably need to complete a minigame, while the opponent on defense must complete their own minigame to survive. The more damage the opponent has taken, the harder these minigames will become. It’s also likely that the defending opponent will have access to one-time perks to escape, such as Resiliency, a staple of the WWE 2K series used to kick out of difficult pin attempts.

Although these new match types are promising, it’s yet another year where WWE 2K appears to be skipping the unique NXT match type Iron Survivor, first established in December 2022. Iron Survivor is a highlight of NXT Deadline each year, where five wrestlers enter the ring at staggered five-minute intervals over a 25-minute match, and the superstar with the most pins wins. Each time a pin is scored, the defeated wrestler is sent to a penalty box for a timed interval.

Iron Survivor would be a frantic and intense match type, especially online, similar to Elimination Chamber. However, it is admittedly more complex to implement, likely explaining why it has yet to debut in video games, alongside the fact that it only appears in NXT and not on the main roster.

WWE 2K26 is expected to release before March 31, 2026, the date when WWE 2K24’s servers are scheduled to shut down. AAA’s El Hijo del Vikingo has seemingly confirmed that he has been scanned, and NXT Darkstate’s Osiris Griffin has also confirmed being scanned.

In addition to serving as the Showcase mode star, CM Punk is rumored to be the cover star. There are also rumors that DLC will add Torrie Wilson, stemming from an anonymous source that accurately leaked the full WWE 2K25 Season Pass.
