Dotemu has announced that retro revival Windjammers 2 will arrive on consoles and PC from January 20, 2022.
The game had originally intended to arrive by the end of 2021, but needs just a couple more weeks in the oven first. The team says they’ve taken the community’s feedback from the game’s PlayStation beta back in August to help them improve how the game will turn out.
An accompanying post on the PlayStation blog offers a little more insight into the game’s development too. Part of this involved digging into the code of the original 1994 game, which the team were able to do while they worked on porting it to PlayStation 4 back in 2017. Initially, the team had considered building the sequel as a “carbon copy” from the code used for that remaster, but these plans heavily expanded as development progressed.
Windjammers 2 includes ten characters, a mixture of brand new and returning ones, as well as ten new courts. Some of these even have unique features, such as the Casino court which can change the value of scores. There’s an arcade mode with bonus games, and of course online play is supported.
Check out the trailer for yourself below. Windjammers 2 arrives on Jan 20 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. It’ll be playable via backwards compatibility on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and it’ll launch day one on Xbox Game Pass too.
