Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has released its first trailer promising an action packed return to the battle between the Autobots and Deceptions, but, it has also prompted fans to ask, just when is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts set?

It’s a good question, to be fair, considering that the franchise first began in 2007 with director Michael Bay’s first instalment, titled aptly, Transformers.

With a new instalment in the franchise coming regularly afterwards with 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2011’s Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, and 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight.

Before the series was then quietly rebooted with the release in 2018 of Bumblebee which proved to be both a critical and commercial hit as celebrated Laika Studios director, Travis Knight, brought his years of knowledge and experience as an animation director to the franchise.

Resulting in a movie that took the Transformers franchise back to its roots in more ways than one. As with the movie’s epic opening depicting the war on the Transformers home planet, Cybertron, with the Autobots and Decepticons depicted in their familiar animated series and original toy designs rather than the modern designs used in the Bay directed movies.

Finally, fans received their wish of seeing these iconic characters on the big screen in live action in the way that they had always hoped to see them.

Additionally the movie also succeeded in telling a heart warming and action packed story that paid homage to the original animated series while still standing as it’s own story. Thus giving the franchise a much needed shot of energon and a box office redemption that quickly saw this sequel, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts greenlit.

But, is Rise of the Beasts set in the 1980’s as Bumblebee was, or is it set in the 21st Century following the Michael Bay directed Transformers movies?

Well, is Transformers Rise of the Beasts set in the 80’s or the 2020’s?

Neither, the movie is said to be set in 1994. So, while it is a sequel to Bumblebee which was set in 1987, Rise of the Beasts takes place in the 1990’s and focuses on two brand new human characters who discover the Transformers.
