‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Story?

While no official story synopsis has been released yet for Season 3. The teaser trailer from D23 makes it clear that following Season 2 of ‘The Mandalorian’ wherein Din Djarin removed his helmet twice (Episodes 7 and 8), breaking the Death Watch creed that a Mandalorian will never remove their helmet, he is no longer considered a Mandalorian.

However, what this teaser trailer doesn’t reveal, that the leaked D23 trailer did, is that Din/The Mandalorian promises to travel to the Mandalorian homeworld of Mandalore in order to seek forgiveness for his transgressions. Which, is where we see at 00:58 in the trailer, the devastated ruins of Mandalore’s capital city, Sundari. A result of the Galactic Empire’s destruction of Mandalore during “The Great Purge of Mandalore”. Which has, as yet, not been shown in full, but has been mentioned several times in ‘The Mandalorian’ and other Star Wars media, with The Armorer often referring to it as “The Night of a Thousand Tears”. It is also where, in the teaser trailer for Season 3, we see Bo Katan sitting alone in the Throne Room.

From everything that has been shown so far both publicly and exclusively at events like Celebration. It seems very clear that this season will have a heavy focus on the culture and history of the Mandalorians, in particular the scars and fractures of their history such as the splintering of the Mandalorian people by the ideals of Pre-Vizsla and his Death Watch and the more peaceful ideals of Bo Katan’s slain sister, Duchess Satine Kryze.

A fracture which was only widened in the years after Death Watch’s defeat and the deaths of both Vizsla and Duchess Satine at the hand of the former Sith Lord, Maul, who would then rule Mandalore himself before his defeat by former Jedi apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, leading the 501st Legion of Clone Troopers alongside Bo-Katan and her Mandalorian warriors.

However, victory would short lived, as once Emperor Palpatine enacted Order 66, the Clone Troopers and Galactic Republic forces who were the planet’s saviours would then become their new oppressors as the Galactic Republic became the Galactic Empire and recruited many of Maul and Death Watch’s former followers such as Gar Saxon to police and subjugate the people of Mandalore.

In addition, with the upcoming Ahsoka focused series following Ahsoka and Sabine Wren’s quest to find Jedi, Ezra Bridger, who was last seen being teleported into the Unknown Regions along with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Who we know, following ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 revelation of a former Imperial carrying out Thrawn’s orders, has either managed to return from the Unknown Regions, or found a way to communicate with Imperials still loyal to him.

Given his history with Sabine and his defeat due to the aid of Sabine, Bo-Katan, and Mandalorian forces, could we see him as an antagonist in this series as well? Tying the ‘Ahsoka’ series and ‘The Mandalorian’ closer together. As the Darksaber which is now wielded by Din, was once wielded by Sabine, who relinquished it to Bo-Katan, before it was then lost to Moff Gideon.
