“Rebel Moon” is Writer/Producer/Director, Zack Snyder’s, upcoming science fiction epic for Netflix that sees Snyder’s dream of making a “Star Wars” movie inspired by “Seven Samurai“, the iconic 1954 movie by acclaimed Director, Akira Kurosawa, that continues to inspire filmmakers across the globe, and famously led to Hollywood remake that has become iconic in its own right, 1960’s “The Magnificent Seven“, finally come true.

And, when I say that “Rebel Moon” is Snyder’s dream of making a “Seven Samurai” inspired “Star Wars” movie, I assure you that this is not mere hyperbole. As the movie actually began life as a pitch by Snyder to “Star Wars” rights holders, Lucasfilm Ltd, to make a movie set in the “Star Wars” universe that would take inspiration from Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” just as “Star Wars” creator, George Lucas, took inspiration from Kurosawa’s work, most notably 1958’s “The Hidden Fortress“.

Should this first movie be a success for Netflix, Snyder has already confirmed that like “Star Wars”, he already has plans to build an entire “Rebel Moon” multi-media universe for Netflix, with sequels and other projects planned focusing on different stories and characters.

When does “Rebel Moon” Release?

No official release date has been confirmed for the movie yet. But it is currently in its production/shooting phase. So, with this in mind, I wouldn’t expect to see the movie before late 2023 at the earliest, but more than likely between March and May 2024, as this is when Zack Snyder usually releases his movies.

Where will I be able to watch “Rebel Moon”?

As the movie is a Netflix production, it is most likely to be screened exclusively on Netflix as Snyder’s previous Netflix movie “Army of the Dead” was. But, given the epic nature and star studded cast of the movie, it is also entirely possible that Netflix will release the movie to a limited run of theatres, or possibly give it a worldwide theatrical debut before then having it exclusive to streaming when it leaves theatres.

What is the story of the movie?

The story for the movie is said to follow:

an enigmatic young woman who is given the responsibility by a peaceful colony on the outskirts of the galaxy to find warriors who can fend off an impending invasion by the despotic Regent Balisarius.

As mentioned at the start of this article, this is of course inspired directly by Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” which:

tells the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits.
