There are very few games, let alone PlayStation exclusives, that are anywhere near as divisive as The Last of Us Part 2. Some think it’s a masterpiece, some think it’s torrid, and then there are many who either love the gameplay and hate the story or love the story and hate the gameplay. Naughty Dog officially announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered following leaks. If you recall, the launch of TLOU2 was heavily spoiled by leaks, too. Lots of people went into the game furious, thanks to leaked footage and screenshots revealing the fate of a fan-favorite protagonist. Many people also went into the game with assumptions about another character that turned out to be false. While the game’s reception from fans was divisive, to say the least, the critical reception was sublime and it had ten nominations at The Game Awards 2020.

A remaster may sound pointless on paper, as it only came out back in June 2020. However, the PS5 upgrade offers lots of new content and it’s something for TLOU fans to be excited about.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered PS5 release date

The release date for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on the PS5 is January 19th, 2024. This is confirmed on the official PlayStation Blog post. Looking at the release schedule for games in 2024, this launch day means TLOU2 comes out just two days before Tekken 8 and Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth on January 26th.

Although the original game is on PS4, this Remaster is exclusive to PS5. It again tells the sequel to Part 1, and the leading playable characters are Ellie and Abby. In addition to this retelling coming out soon, we also know that we are getting season 2 of HBO’s television adaptation. This is speculated to arrive in 2025.

How to pre-order TLOU2 Remastered

You can pre-order The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered from December 5th. There will be a Standard digital version available to buy, and there will also be a physical W.L.F. edition exclusively available from PlayStation Direct. This W.L.F. edition will include the following content:

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered PS5 price

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered comes with a $10 upgrade price. So, if you own a digital copy of the PS4 version of the game, all you will have to do is pay $10 to upgrade to the new PS5 version. This has been done with several other games in the recent past, such as the Death Stranding Director’s Cut. Alas, as of writing, there’s no mention of how much TLOU2 costs if you don’t already own the PS4 release. Presumably, it will cost the same as any other new AAA PlayStation exclusive.

Unfortunately, if you own a physical copy of the game on PS4, you will have to buy Remastered at its full price. This is because the $10 upgrade scheme only applies to PS4 digital copies.

TLOU2 new mode and upgraded content

Arguably the most exciting aspect of the upcoming remaster is the addition of a new mode called No Return. This is a roguelike survival mode where you get to play different characters from the game’s story and setting. Each character comes with its own attributes and playstyles, and each playthrough will offer unique scenarios thanks to random enemy encounters.

In addition to this new mode, Naughty Dog is also adding more flexibility to the guitar. Through a new Guitar Free Play mode, you will be able to play an assortment of new unlockable instruments, as well as again play as several different characters. Finally, there will also be playable sequences of previously cut levels from the game. Rather than fully finished and refurbished levels, these are cut sequences that will be accompanied by commentary from the development team to provide a glimpse into the creative process.
