The Finals is a great game. It’s fun, chaotic, and unlike most other multiplayer video games saturating the market such as Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Overwatch. While fans unanimously believe that the game is overall excellent, there is a major issue with The Finals that fans agree must be fixed as it’s worse than all of the other aforementioned multiplayer competition.

You can find the update 2.4.0 patch notes online. This is the most recent update from developer Embark Studios, and it has provided a huge change to contracts that has divided fans. In addition, the update has also begun a new challenge in which players can easily win a new Hi-Fi Boombox along with individual rewards from Embark.

Rather than delivering buffs and nerfs, yesterday’s update was mostly quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. While there were several key fixes delivered, fans believe Embark needs to fix the audio for footsteps.

The Finals must fix footsteps audio

Many of The Finals fans agree that Embark Studios needs to fix the audio in regard to footsteps. Taking to Reddit, user Tayl_0R_Medium posted a thread asking ‘Does anyone else find it strange how you can hear teammates footsteps with pinpoint accuracy yet most enemy footsteps are non existent?’.

The Reddit post says they ‘think the game is generally pretty good balance wise but the footstep audio is not in a good state yet’. In the replies, one of the top comments says ‘I’m on PC, I have an audio interface, I have good headphones, I often get confused with my own footsteps sounding like they’re coming from behind me’.

Many more comments agree with the sentiment that there are issues with the audio. Another reply says ‘I can hear my own footsteps over everything else, it’s really confusing,’ meanwhile, another says ‘The only time I can hear enemy footsteps is if my entire team is standing perfectly still and nothing is happening around us’.

Compared to other multiplayer games such as Warzone and Apex Legends, one user says ‘Not sure any game has great audio but this one might be one of the worst in that metric’. Echoing this sentiment, another comment elaborated saying ‘this game has some of the worst directional audio in FPS games’ compared to Counterstike, Battlefield V, and Hunt Showdown.

This comment further says ‘Apex Legends has terrible audio, and somehow this game [The Finals] is even worse’. Issues include ‘sometimes the audio will come from the front when someone is shooting from behind’ and ‘your own footsteps are 100x louder than the enemies”.

Embark Studios do routinely listen to fans as evidenced by updates, so here’s hoping audio problems do get resolved. Sound design is a huge component of any multiplayer game, and mishearing the direction of enemies and gunfire can really put players at a significant disadvantage.
