Competitive shooters may be one of the most saturated genres in gaming today. Many games have tried to break into the market that is dominated by the likes of Call of Duty, CS:GO, Fortnite, and Apex Legends and many have shut down within a year or two. It seems like The Finals may be able to break through and become a key title in the genre as it still sees a consistent amount of players jumping in each day, and it has seen a considerable jump in players following the start of Season 2.

Before the Season 2 update, The Finals would see approximately 10-15,000 concurrent players on Steam, with the count usually peaking around 20,000 each day. However, since the Season 2 update the game has been averaging 35-40,000 with a peak of 48,000 according to Steamdb. This is still considerably lower than its peak of 242,618 players when the game launched in December 2023. But it is understandable to see the player count drop after the initial intrigue dies down.

Only time will tell as to whether the player count stays consistently higher, but with the positive response to the Season 2 update, The Finals could be on its way to cementing its spot as one of the top competitive shooters.

The Finals players took to Reddit to praise the game’s Season 2 update, with U/Chicago_Typewriter_ saying “I hope to see player count go up, the way the game is going and how Embark [Studios] keeps delivering I think it deserves it.”

U/NoAstronaut11720 has replaced Overwatch with The Finals claiming “It’s such a breath of fresh air after years of uninspired cash grab games and in the case of Overwatch, straight-up development laziness,” while U/Sinsanitis moved from Apex Legends saying “Instant uninstall when The Finals dropped.”

One of the main difficulties new games face is trying to get visibility and stand out among the endless amount of games on the market, but it is a positive sign to see players move over from more established titles such as Overwatch and Apex Legends. With the weekend coming up, it will be interesting to see whether The Finals breaks passed the current peak today of over 48,000 when more gamers will be at home, as well as whether this boost in players stays for the long term.

The Finals Season 2 was released on March 14, and brought many much-needed changes to the game.
