As per tradition, The Finals received its weekly update on Wednesday. The patch notes for this update included a couple of nerfs and buffs, along with several significant bug fixes. While the update was extensive, what the patch notes failed to mention is a secret improvement to melee weapons noticed by The Finals community.
You can check out the update 2.10.0 patch notes to see all of the buffs, nerfs, and fixes. In conjunction with this new update, Embark is giving players 10x XP for a limited-time, and the last Season 2 community event has begun with a new free item for players to win.
One of the highlights of the patch notes is buffs to throwing knives along with a nerf for the APS turret. While these two changes are significant and noticeable in-game, The Finals community has also noticed the addition of AOE damage for melee weapons.
The Finals fans notice AOE damage added to melee weapons
Shared by Tigersenpai on Reddit, The Finals’ most recent update appears to have added AOE damage to the sledgehammer. The Reddit post is accompanied by gameplay showing the sledgehammer hitting two practice dummies simultaneously in a single swing.
The OP elaborated on the sledgehammer changes in the comments: “Since I see a bunch of confused people, allow me to explain. I’m a sledge main, the damage hitbox has always stayed for extra time, but the game did NOT allow you to hit more than a single target in one swing. This was, in fact, a brand new mechanic added this last update”.
In the comments, players acknowledged being able to hit two dummies at once in practice, but it now appears to work against actual players. It’s only been possible to hit a single player with a melee weapon, but the community is claiming that sledgehammers and swords are now capable of hitting two players simultaneously during bouts.
Again, this is not included in the patch notes. In the comments, the OP mentions “Hopefully it isn’t unintended… been asking for this since forever”. It’s possible it could be unintentional similar to the freelook ability that was introduced in 2.9.0 and subsequently removed in update 2.10.0.
It hasn’t been acknowledged by Embark yet, so it remains to be seen whether it will be removed. Fans are hoping it won’t be removed as the community is thrilled with the addition whether intentional or not. One user commented “It should have always been this way”, meanwhile, another user commented “as a heavy main I LOVE THIS”.
While sledgehammers can now hit two people with swings, there are claims that sword is now capable of hitting two players with lunges. Some users in the comments feel that this is OP, leading to the belief that these changes are unintentional and will probably be reverted. This remains to be seen, but we should find out by next week’s update.
