Bethesda’s upcoming space opus Starfield is unlikely to be released for a good while yet, according to cool leather jacket man and game director Todd Howard.

Speaking during an interview with Eurogamer at Gamelab, Howard revealed that Starfield is being built with next-generation hardware in mind, although wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the game turning up on existing platforms.

In other words, you’re not going to get your paws on the title for a while yet.

‘What systems we put it out on — what’s the hardware requirements — is still to be determined,’ commented Howard. ‘We’re pushing it; we’re thinking very, very far in future, so we’re building something that will handle next-generation hardware. That’s what we’re building on right now, that’s where our mind is, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t exist on the current systems as well.’

Elsewhere, Howard revealed that the idea of Starfield has been knocking around since 2004.

‘We had made a list of what we might want to do in the future, and an epic science-fiction game has always been on my mind,’ he said. ‘Post-apocalyptic was our first choice, sci-fi was our second at the time — we were going to do our own post-apocalyptic universe if we didn’t get Fallout [from Interplay in 2004].’

Starfield was announced at E3 with a brief teaser trailer, and according to Howard, is currently in a playable state.
