With the Starfield release date just around the corner, fans have been dreaming and theorizing about the exploration the game will offer on launch. With Skyrim being among some of Bethesda’s best games to release fans are already hopeful that Starfield exploration will make the other look small by comparison.
It’s not a controversial statement to say that since the original release of Skyrim in 2011 the industry, as a whole, has been able to pack bigger and bigger experiences into their games. In some cases, this can just lead to wide open spaces with no real appeal but for fans of Starfield, players are already hopeful the game will firmly cement the next evolution of Bethesda exploration.
Taking to the Starfield Reddit, one player noted that while they love the exploration in Skyrim, after years of playing they’ve come to know that certain landmarks are just minutes away when appearing to be in the middle of nowhere. User i_am_not_a_good_idea mentioned that Skyrim uses a lot of “clever tricks” to elude the player into thinking they’re in a bigger area than they actually are. These tricks include a low fog distance, low mountains covered with clouds, and winding paths that elongate your journey.
However, they proclaim that none of that should be necessary for Starfield. They said, “When you land in your ship and walk in a straight line into the forest for five miles, you really are going to be five miles into the wilderness, and there will be no Riften just a five-minute walk away”. They were most excited about the sense of isolation these bigger worlds will allow and “the knowledge that you could run into a new location, or a new enemy type, or a random encounter, will only enhance that feeling”.
Other players also noted their intent to really take their time with Starfield as opposed to rushing through the main story. Another player also said, “I can’t f**king wait for how much of my life this game will eat up”. If you’re excited to explore Starfield’s world you may want to consider bringing along one of the Starfield companions as company.
