Everyone is still trying to dissect the Starfield Direct footage we saw last month. However, one small feature that has been garnering continued discourse among Starfield fans is if you’ll be able to enable autopilot on your ship. One fan has taken to social media after noticing that there appears to be an autopilot feature on one of the ships shown during the showcase.
Taking to the Starfield Reddit, user OkPain2022 posted the image below which shows an Auto Flight feature turned off. You’d imagine if something is turned off it can ultimately be turned on. This is what many players have been theorizing. The user said, “The most significant piece of information is the “Auto Flight: OFF” that can be seen consistently on every dashboard, and it’s the first displayed information. No ship escapes it. I believe this confirms that it is possible to switch it to “ON” and thus engage autopilot.”
Starfield fans have been deep in discussion about this topic since the Direct last month, with one player pointing to a ship in the trailer taking off and saying, “This is a ship taking off from our location. Wondering if it’s piloted by our companions.” Another player pointed to an IGN interview between Ryan McCaffrey and Todd Howard where Howard appeared to allude to an auto-pilot feature when speaking about an encounter he had during the game. Howard said, “I got on the ship and while I’m shooting the guys on the surface of the planet, the ship took off into space.”
Given that some of the Starfield companions also have skills like ‘Piloting’ it has led to players wondering if characters with a high skill level in this attribute will be able to pilot your ship while you’re off doing something else aboard. It is probably likely that Starfield will feature some form of auto-pilot/fast travel given the amount of planets you can explore but we’ll just have to wait and see.
