GSC Game World has confirmed that Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has already turned a profit for the small development studio just weeks after launch. Despite massive techincal issues such as a broken AI system and attacks from Russian disinformation campaigns, the flawed-but-great survival game is a massive success.
Stalker 2 is profitable
Revealed in an article by Forbes Ukraine, GSC Game World confirmed that the latest Stalker game has already “recouped its investment and turned a profit”. Company investor Maksym Krippa revealed that the game has already made back the “tens of millions of dollars” spent on its development, and more content is in the works.
Alongside continued work on fixing the game’s A-Life system and patching bugs, developer GSC Game World is working on two new expansions and a multiplayer mode for the game. There are no updates on when players can expect the additional content or how much has been made already.
Nevertheless, with money already made, GSC Game World can afford to stick with the survival game without issue. With player numbers and sales still climbing, Stalker 2 appears to have long legs—allowing the team to continue working on the title for years to come.
In an interview earlier this year, GSC Game World revealed that the team didn’t want to release Stalker 2 in its current state, but instead had to. At the time of writing, the team is working on official releases for the game’s biggest problems, but they may take a while to become reality, especially as the A-Life feature’s issues are down to aggressive optimisation.
However, for PC gamers at least, modders are also working to fix the game, with many targeting the A-Life mechanic as well as adding better movement and even fast travel options for those who hate walking.
In our review of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, we enjoyed the survival game a lot, but we know it’s not for everyone. Will it be our Game of the Year? Probably not, but it is a fantastic and utterly unique game for a modern audience.
