Sega has announced Sonic Superstars, a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog game in a 2D guise set for release later this year.

Classic Sonic fans who prefer the Blue Blur’s original side-scrolling roots are in for a treat, with modern visuals to keep things looking fresh. We got a quick peek at the game in its first trailer, that also revealed you’ll be able to take on the levels with friends playing other members of Sonic’s squad including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose.

There’s plenty of other nods to Sonic past, including the return of the spinning bonus stages made famous in Sonic 1. There’ll be brand new zones to burst through – and we’re promised new powers and abilities too.

Sonic Superstars will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC – it doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but will be coming in Fall 2023.
