We’ve got a new trailer and an official confirmation that Sonic’s 2022 outing will indeed be named Sonic Frontiers.

Last night’s reveal at The Game Awards gave us a little bit more following the tease earlier this year. Sonic’s new adventure will take place in a location known as the Starfall Islands. And as you can see from the footage below, it’s a world full of lush landscapes, dense forests, rushing waterfalls and more.

The big thing to note here is that Sega are boasting that the game will feature “high velocity open-zone freedom”. In other words, it seems Sonic will be going open-world in a manner that does bear a resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The trailer stops short of showing us any actual gameplay though, so we’ll have to wait a little longer for that.

As previously alluded to, it wasn’t the only appearance from the blue blur during the ceremony. We also got to see the trailer for the new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie in action. You can check that out below including an appearance from Idris Elba’s Knuckles. The movie arrives on American screens on April 8, 2022. The UK release is still to be given a firm date outside the 2022 window.

As for Sonic Frontiers, we can expect that in Holiday 2022. The blue blur will be speeding to the Starfall Islands on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
