How many episodes are in Season 1?

During an interview earlier this year with IGN.com, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that She-Hulk’s first season will have 10 episodes that are each around 30 minutes in length.

Who are the characters appearing in She-Hulk?

(Advisory, there are potential spoilers here for both the show and Marvel comics.)

Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk

The star of the show, She-Hulk, is played by the incredibly talented and versatile Tatiana Maslany, who you may recognise from her breakout performance in BBC America’s Orphan Black or from HBO’s Perry Mason series or possibly from her voice performance as Aja in Netflix’s Trollhunters animated shows.

But, who is She Hulk?

Well, She-Hulk is the superhero identity of Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner, more commonly recognised as The Hulk.

In the comics, Jennifer becomes She-Hulk due to a life saving transfusion of Bruce’s gamma irradiated blood after she is fatally shot by a criminal gunman in retaliation for a legal case she was working on.

This blood transfusion would lead to Jennifer being able to transform into her own version of The Hulk, but unlike Bruce, she retained her intelligence when transformed.

Over the decades, Jennifer has become a key figure in the Marvel comics universe and has at various times been a member of The Avengers as well as working with other superhero teams like the Fantastic Four.

For this series though, it appears that the creators are merging Jennifer’s comic origins with her later comic stories where she works as an attorney in the Superhuman Law Division of the Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg, & Holliway law firm.

As in the trailers for the series, we see Bruce teaching Jennifer how to control her transformations between human and She-Hulk as well as how to control and use her new found strength as She-Hulk. Before then seeing Jennifer at work in GLK&H dealing with superhuman law cases.

Bruce Banner/ The Hulk

MCU star Mark Ruffalo returns as The Hulk, picking up from his cameo appearance as Bruce at the end of Shang Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings.

Interestingly as it hasn’t been confirmed yet where in the post Endgame MCU timeline She-Hulk takes place. We see Bruce in the trailers for the show in his Smart Hulk form from Avengers: Endgame. Even though in Shang-Chi we saw him appear in his human form with his right arm in a sling implying that either he was no longer The Hulk as normally he would heal from most wounds, or, he had suffered such a severe injury that it was taking longer than normal for him to heal.

It also appears from the shows trailers that we may only be seeing Bruce in the first episode and/or flashbacks showing Jennifer’s time training with him. Which makes sense as ultimately this is She-Hulk’s show and it’s only right that Jennifer be the focus of the show.

Titania

Images courtesy of Marvel Studios

She-Hulk’s classic arch enemy in the comics and it seems in this new series as well. Titania is played by Jameela Jamil who will be familiar to many UK audiences from her early career as a presenter on T4, and to audiences across the world for her breakout acting performance as Tahani in The Good Place.

At present, not much is known about Titania’s history in the MCU other than that she is a superpowered criminal who comes into conflict with She-Hulk.

It will be very interesting though to see how much, if any, of her comics backstory is used in the series as Titania was given her powers by Fantastic Four antagonist Doctor Doom during the Secret Wars crossover event in the 1980’s that famously introduced the black symbiote Spider-Man suit that would later become Venom.

As Kevin Feige has confirmed at this years San Diego Comic Con that both Fantastic Four, and Secret Wars movies are coming in the near future. Could we see the first seeds of these movies being laid in She-Hulk with Titania?

Wong

The Sorcerer Supreme of Earth makes his return after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, played once more by Benedict Wong, and judging by the show’s trailers, it appears he has an integral part to play in this latest chapter of the MCU.

As from the glimpses shown in the trailers, it appears that mystical weapons are now finding their way into the hands of criminals, possibly due to the events of both Loki and Multiverse of Madness.

Wong appears to be seeking Jennifer’s help in stopping these weapons from falling into the wrong hands while protecting the Earth from more multiversal danger.

Emile Blonsky/Abomination

Tim Roth makes his MCU return as Emile Blonksy/Abomination after he was last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, the second movie released in the MCU. However, this will be the third time the character of Abomination has appeared in the MCU as the character was seen fighting Wong in the fight club owned by Shang Chi’s sister, Xu Xialing.

Here we see Blonksy is being held in a cell that looks like a larger scale version of the cell used to hold Loki in The Avengers which, as noted in that movie, was designed specifically to contain The Hulk.

Blonsky is on trial, but for what we’re not told, as at this point in the MCU timeline it’s been at least a decade since the events of The Incredible Hulk, and as mentioned before, Blonsky was free and fighting in the fight club. So what has he done since that he is now on trial for, that also, presumably, led to his capture.

As Jennifer is shown in the trailers to be defending Blonsky as his attorney and Titania attacks the court room, it’s possible that the show could be replacing Titania’s romantic relationship in the comics with the supervillain, The Absorbing Man, for a relationship instead with Blonsky.

Matt Murdock/Daredevil

Making his official MCU debut (as sadly, although the Netflix shows were meant to be canon, Marvel Studios never treated them as such due to internal conflicts with the TV division at that time), Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Initially given a very brief tease in the first show trailer with a quick shot of Matt’s familiar costume from his Netflix show but seemingly painted in yellow and red. His appearance and new costume were further confirmed in further teases in the subsequent show trailers.

Beyond Matt being a fellow attorney, and the surprise MCU debut of his arch nemesis Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) in last years Hawkeye Disney + series, we still don’t have any information on why Matt is appearing in the show, or why he has repainted his costume.

Comic fans however will recognise this colour scheme as Matt’s original Daredevil costume from the very beginning of his comic run before it was redrawn to the now iconic all red suit that he has wore for nearly 50 years. But, as to why he changes his look in the MCU, could it be a form of penance or rebirth after the events of Daredevil Season 3?

Only time will tell as we know from SDCC that Daredevil: Born Again will be a brand new Disney + series coming in 2024 starring Cox and D’Onofrio, and potentially spinning out of the events of next years Echo series in which they are also confirmed to be appearing.

Nikki Ramos

Images courtesy of Marvel Studios

Played by Ginger Gonzaga, not much is known about Nikki at the moment other than that she is Jennifer’s best friend, she works alongside her as a paralegal at the GLK&H law firm, and she is Jennifer’s main emotional support and confidant in the show.

But, knowing how Marvel loves to seed plotlines and characters throughout each of their shows and movies related to their future shows and movies. Could there be more to Nikki than meets the eye?

Specifically, could Nikki actually be the exiled Skrull warrior, Jazinda?

As in the Marvel comics, Jazinda is a Skrull living on earth who over time becomes good friends with Jennifer as the two work together at Freeman Bonding Inc, a subsidiary of the GLK&H law firm specialising in bail bonds cases.

Knowing that a Secret Invasion TV show is on the way, based on the 2008 comic event of the same name, that revealed the Skrulls had been living on earth for decades, replacing key figures of earth including its superheroes as the opening strategy of their invasion of earth.

Could we see Marvel setting up further threads for that series by revealing Nikki as Jazinda?

As it was Jazinda in the comics who first warned of the coming Skrull invasion. And not to forget, we’ve already seen the first seeds for Secret Invasion with the reveal in Spider-Man: Far From Home that Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos and Sharon Blynn’s Soren had been posing as Nick Fury and Maria Hill, seemingly at Fury’s request while he was on an, as yet undisclosed, mission on a Skrull ship.

All we know so far of the MCU adaptation of Secret Invasion is that it will see Fury and Talos racing to stop a rogue faction of Skrulls who have infiltrated Earth seeking to conquer it and no doubt they will need all the help they can get to stop the invasion.

Augustus Pugliese

Played by Josh Segerra who will be familiar to TV fans for his roles in Arrow (as the villainous Adrian Chase/Prometheus), AJ and the Queen (as the dim witted and misguided Damian Sanchez), and FBI (as the headstrong hostage negotiator, Special Agent Nestor Vertiz) to name just a few of his starring roles in recent years.

In She-Hulk he plays Augustus Pugliese, also sometimes known as Pug, another key character from the She-Hulk comics. As like Jennifer he is also a lawyer at the GLK&H law firm specialising in superhuman law cases.

It feels safe to say that Augustus is going to be Jennifer’s main romantic interest in this first season as in the comics, he had a secret crush on Jennifer who was oblivious to his affections, thinking he only saw her as a friend.

This obliviousness and Augustus never finding the right moment to tell Jennifer how he felt would lead to him taking a potion that restricted him from ever having feelings for Jennifer again, but, as fantasy fans know, magic always comes with a price, and sadly for Augustus, the price was becoming indentured to a witch whose name he can never say.

Lets just hope that his MCU counterpart has a far happier fate than that of his comic counterpart.
