At a brisk 2 minutes and 28 seconds, there’s so much information packed into this latest trailer, that I will be writing a separate article breaking down everything we see, including some very important teases of what’s to come, woven throughout the trailer.

But, before that, in addition to this brand new trailer, the movie’s full official poster has been released as well:

Simple but epic, this poster follows the movie’s latest trailer in that it shows us two of the key romantic relationships at the heart of the movie, Neytiri and Jake, and their son, Lo’ak, and Tsi’reya, the daughter of the clan leaders of the new water dwelling, Metkayina clan.

While below them we see several Na’vi riding on the backs of “Tsurak/Skimwings”, the new flying aquatic creatures seen throughout the promotional materials for the movie, seemingly taking over from ‘Avatars’ “Banshees”.

Per /Film who attended a roundtable interview with director, James Cameron, for the upcoming re-release of ‘Avatar’ back into cinemas with a new 4K 48FPS cut. When asked about 3D and his decision to use 3D shooting once more on ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, Cameron had this to say:

I would say that the 3D was generally embraced for a period of time. ‘Avatar’ won the best cinematography with a 3D digital camera. No digital camera had ever won the best cinematography Oscar before. Then two out of the three subsequent years, the same cameras were used by the cinematographers that won the Oscar. So you got 3 out of 4 years where the Academy embraced digital cinematography. And all 3 of those films were in 3D.

He would then follow this up by saying:

3D appears to most people to sort of be ‘over.’ But it’s really not over. It’s just been accepted. It’s just now a part of your choices when you go to the theater to see a big blockbuster movie … I liken it to color. When color films first came out, it was a big deal. People would go to see movies because they were in color. I think around the time of ‘Avatar,’ people used to go to see movies because they were in 3D … I think it had an impact on how films were presented that’s now just sort of accepted and part of the zeitgeist and how it’s done.

Avatar: The Way of Water Story?

To begin, here is the movie’s story synopsis per the official ‘Avatar’ website, and then I will elaborate further on this synopsis with more information that has been revealed by James Cameron, and his producer, Jon Landau, over the years about the movie:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Further to this synopsis, it’s important to know that, while Avatar explored the lives and culture of the Omatikaya clan and their home, Kelutral/The Home Tree. ‘Way of Water’, as its name suggests, is set to explore the oceans of Pandora, introducing new reef dwelling Na’vi tribe, the Metkayina.

As the movie, while bringing back Neytiri and Jake Sully, our heroes from ‘Avatar’, are not necessarily the main focus of this story. For, as confirmed by Jon Landau in this interview in December 2021 with Entertainment Weekly:

“Ultimately, the sequels are a story about family, and the lengths parents will go through to keep that family together and keep them safe,”

“I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes — and really, there’s no more universal theme than family.”

Further to this, at the time of ‘Way of Water’, we will see that Jake and Neytiri have five children, three of whom are their biological children, and two who they’ve adopted and raised as their own:

Thanks to Empire Magazine and the official ‘Avatar’ website, the first image above shows Jake and Neytiri with their biological Na’vi children:

(From Left to Right) Tuktirey (played by Trinity Bliss), Neteyam (played by Jamie Flatters), and Lo’ak (played by Britain Dalton)

In the next image, we see Jake and Neytiri’s adopted daughter, Kiri, who is another brand new character in the ‘Avatar’ universe, but one who will be played by one of the original movie’s most iconic cast members, Sigourney Weaver.

Then, in the final image, we see a close up of Jake and Neytiri’s adopted human child, Spider/Miles Socorro (played by Jack Champion). For, as revealed in this Empire Online article, Spider was only a baby at the conclusion of the first movie, when the movie’s antagonists, the human corporation, the RDA, were exiled from Pandora and forced to return home to Earth. But, because Spider was too small to make the journey back to Earth, he was left on Pandora, where he was taken in by Jake and Neytiri and raised as part of their family.

Which, speaking of the RDA, the movie’s first trailer makes it clear that they have now returned to Pandora, despite agreeing to never return, because, as we all know, for corporations like the RDA, greed trumps honour every time.

However, unlike before, when the only RDA human/Na’vi hybrids were research scientists documenting Pandora and their interactions with the Na’vi, with Jake then being the sole military trained human to be given a human/Na’vi hybrid. As he was meant to protect the scientists he was assigned to, but was also, initially at least, working at a duel purpose under the orders of Colonel Miles Quaritch, who ordered him to ingratiate himself with the Na’vi in order to learn their secrets.

Whereas now, we see that Jake is no longer the only military trained human/Na’vi hybrid, as none other than Quaritch himself, has been resurrected, following his defeat at the hands of Jake in the original movie’s climactic battle, and now appears to lead his own human/Na’vi hybrid soldiers, as the RDA once more try to destroy Pandora by stripping it of its natural resources.
