The Resident Evil 4 remake’s release earlier this year cemented Capcom as one of the most reliable studios working at the moment. While many fans point to the lack of content present in the Resident Evil 3 remake as a sore point in the latest reimagining of the iconic series, every game released after that has received a fantastic reception.

While it’s only been over three months since Resident Evil 4’s release some fans are already laying out what they’d like to see from a Resident Evil 9 release. With the Ethan Winters saga of the Resident Evil story now concluded, nothing is guaranteed for future instalments. Even the game’s perspective is up for debate as while Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village both utilized a first-person perspective, the Resident Evil remakes have stuck to the third-person viewpoint. Alongside this, Resident Evil Village also received an update accompanied by the Shadows of Rose DLC that made the whole base game playable in the third person.

While that decision is still up for debate some fans have been focusing on how a new entry in the series will open up the world. One player hopes we might see a more Metroidvania-style approach to the Resident Evil series in the next instalment with minimal assistance from in-game objectives. They outlined how this system might work saying that core gameplay would consist of scavenging for resources, piecing together objectives as you explore, finding keys to open new areas, discovering shortcuts and sneaking around, “powerful Mr X/Nemesis style predators.”

A number of these features such as resource scavenging and finding keys and shortcuts are already staples of the Resident Evil series. However, the user wants players to imagine doing all these things in “one large changing environment,” with no transition periods like between the RPD, sewers and labs we saw in the Resident Evil 2 remake.

This certainly seems like an interesting idea although we imagine some Resident Evil fans would rather stick to the more confined, expertly crafted formula the series is known for. Importantly though, a lot of players are expecting Resident Evil 9 to continue with either Chris Redfield being a major character or even the main playable character. Given the ending of Resident Evil Village, this seems like a pretty safe bet but we’ll have to wait and see as the time draws nearer for Capcom’s highly anticipated ninth mainline entry in the Resident Evil series.

In the meantime, Resident Evil 4 fans can rejoice as the Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways DLC may be here soon as achievements leak online. Alongside this, One of gaming’s best horror devs names surprise horror game “2023’s sleeper hit”.
