David Szymanski, horror game creator of Iron Lung and Gloomwood fame, has declared Amnesia The Bunker as 2023’s sleeper hit so far. Even though there have been several suspenseful entries released throughout the year to date including the Dead Space Remake and the Resident Evil 4 Remake, it seems that Frictional Games’ underrated fourth series installment has taken the spotlight due to its thrilling mix of immersive sim and survival horror elements.

According to Szymanski’s glowing Twitter thread praising Amnesia The Bunker, the horror developer stated that “this is one of the best survival horror games in a while, in a year filled with amazing survival horror games, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t like other Amnesia titles.” “Imagine a game that combines ideas from Arkane immersive sims, the Resident Evil 1 Remake, Alien Isolation, and Penumbra: Overture, and does all of those ideas perfectly,” he continued.

He would go on to mention that “the most shocking thing to me is that it nails something that even a lot of (very good) Resident Evil clones don’t quite manage: the tension of planning a trip from your safe room and agonizing over what you need to bring and how you’re going to manage obstacles.” Now, even though it’s easy to disregard the claims of one highly-decorated horror dev, the mountain of positive Steam user reviews commending the game only helps prove its significant community impact.

Szymanski would then end his thread by saying “if you’re interested in what we’re doing with Gloomwood – combining immersive sim and survival horror – play this, because it’s doing the exact same thing and it’s doing it brilliantly.” With Amnesia The Bunker already receiving such high approbation from one of the genre’s premier creators, we could possibly be looking at a game that wins several awards at the end of the year.
