Capcom has admitted that getting the massive alligator boss fight to work in Resident Evil 2 caused its fair share of headaches for the team.

Speaking during an interview with The Daily Star, Resi 2 producers Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Tsuyoshi Kanda admitted that the whole sequence proved at odds with the remake's darker tone, and is all just a bit, well, silly.

The team even thought about scrapping the 'gator fight at one point, but ultimately saw it through. Still, the duo made it clear that the process wasn't particularly easy.

'It was tricky to do without changing the game’s tone a lot. We’re competing with people’s memories with this game, too, and that’s really hard,' Hirabayashi-san said. 'Trying to make a convincing scene where a human-sized character—a guy with a knife—is taking on an alligator… that’s really silly. People don’t remember it as silly because the whole game was groundbreaking at the time, but that moment was ridiculous. It was a difficult process for us, making that work today.'

Kanda-san also chimed in, adding: 'It might be easier for us to answer that question when the game comes out though—we have our own thoughts and what we liked and what we didn’t, and people might feel differently to us on that level.'

Resident Evil 2 is pencilled in for a January 25, 2019 release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, and is more than just a spruced up version of the classic 1998 crap-your-pants-inducing horror sequel.

Capcom revealed last weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con that it will release a Collector's Edition of the game, though shot down any hopes of VR support.
