The upcoming Resident Evil 2 was one of the unequivocal highlights of E3 last month, but Capcom's got news for those expecting just a prettier version of 1998's PlayStation horror classic: It's not going to be a simple 1:1 remake.

Speaking with GamingBolt, Capcom brand manager Mike Lunn explained the game isn't simply called Resident Evil 2 Remake as it's more than just a case of giving the survival horror title a facelift.

Instead, it takes the foundation of the original Resident Evil 2 but crafts something that's both familiar and fresh, catering to Resi aficionados and newcomers alike.

'It won’t be faithful one to one,' Lunn said. 'For someone that’s played the game, some people played it once and some people played it a thousand times because it’s their favourite game. For the people that have even played it a thousand times, we wanted it to feel fresh. That’s why we don’t call it Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s a new game built on top of the foundation.'

One example Lunn gave of how things have changed is the introduction of the Licker enemy (he calls it a 'Lurker,' but we'll forgive him for that), which was an iconic, sofa-soiling moment in the original game.

Other changes are more obvious. Puzzles have been revamped, which is something that happened in the remake of the original Resident Evil for GameCube. The core storyline however, remains more or less intact.

Personally speaking, I'm hoping Capcom expands the Raccoon City streets at the beginning of the game, as well as throwing in some references to Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. After all, Resi 2 took place 24 hours before and after Nemesis, and players briefly visited the R.P.D. during the beginning of the game.

One thing we do know is that Resi 2 will eschew the A/B scenarios from the 1998 version in favour of condensing the action into two campaigns.

Resident Evil 2 is due out on January 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. VideoGamer freelancer Ian Dransfield braved the bloody halls of the R.P.D. at E3, so be sure to read his thoughts on the game here.
