The Pokémon Company has dropped a new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, showcasing Terastallization and more.

The new game will take place in the region of Paldea, described as a land of vast open spaces. There’ll be plenty of people and Pokémon to meet in its lakes, towering peaks, wastelands and mountain ranges – of course. The central point of the region is its largest city: Mesagoza. Here, players will enrol at the Naranja Academy or the Uva Academy, depending on which version of the game they’ve picked up.

Paldea is also home, it turns out, to the Terastal Phenomenon. Apparently, certain Pokémon shine and glimmer like gems, giving them a special power known as Terastallization. Any Pokémon with this will increase the power of any moves that share the same type as a new Tera Type stat that each Pokémon will have. There’ll be 18 Tera Types, meaning plenty of possible combinations. Players will be able to Terastallize their Pokémon once per battle, and the effect lasts until the battle ends. To do so, they’ll need a Terra Orb, which will need to be recharged by touching special crystals found in the game world.

Another new feature in the latest games will be Tera Raid battles. These will see trainers able to team up with three others to take down special Terrastallized wild Pokémon, similar to Max Raid Battles from Pokémon Sword and Shield. You’ll be able to recruit others to your raid, or join a friends’ raid via Link Code. Players will also be able to trade and battle in a new feature called the Poké Portal.
