After a stressful Major Order that saw the community defend X-45 against the Automatons, Arrowhead Game Studios seems to be giving players a break because this Major Order calls for mindless eradication. Rather than focusing on supply lines and liberating planets in a set order to ensure victory, this new Major Order is sending the Helldivers 2 community on an killing spree to wipe out the Terminids.
A new briefing went live earlier today, and it is incredibly vague, ordering the eradication of Terminids to conduct “scientific research.” So far, throughout the Galactic War, Helldivers 2 players have killed over 35 billion Terminids, which will have given Super Earth more than enough research material. Is there more to this than meets the eye?
“In order to better predict certain previous unforeseeable outcomes, the Ministry of Science has begun a Termind Research Initiative. This initiative, if successful, will lead to more democratic outcomes for all of humanity, and ultimately, the Terminds themselves.
Termind evolution is known to accelerate under duress. Therefore, in order to observe potential outcomes, applying controlled duress to the Terminds will be necessary to scientific progress.
The Helldivers are ordered to kill the designated number of Terminds—ideally utilizing a variety of means—in order to aid in scientific research.”
The objective is to eradicate 100 million Terminids, which is a much smaller amount than the 2 billion that players have been tasked with in previous Major Orders. This could be due to the much smaller player base. But, lower numbers haven’t stopped Super Earth from serving Liber-tea because mere hours after it began, it is currently sitting at over 93% completion, so it should be finished within the next hour or two.
The previous Major Order tasked players with liberating and defending X-45 and the community hit 100% completion within hours, and it just stayed liberated for multiple days before suddenly becoming under attack, so it does make me wonder as to whether Arrowhead Game Studios has something up its sleeve and this is just stage one. Or, perhaps the developers gave us an easy win before releasing a more difficult Major Order next.
Arrowhead Game Studios did make players think they had an easy win before diverting attention away from the objective due a mysterious Strategic Alert, which some believe was the Automatons hacking the system. So, it will be interesting to see whether this was simply an easy win to give players extra Medals ahead of the release of the next Warbond, or whether this is phase one of a much larger objective. But for now, the objective is to eradicate Terminids and this would be a great opportunity to try out the brand new Commando Rocket Launcher.
